Well, for some one in the U.S., I would ALWAYS recommend breed rescue rather than a shelter if you are really set on a specific breed rather than a specific individual. Many of the dogs listed as "Havanese" in shelters, are the shelter's "best guess" as to breed. You never really know. So if it really MATTERS to you, breed rescue is more likely to get you the breed you want. Also, the dogs are taken into experienced foster homes, where they are assessed, training is done as necessary, and they can give a really good idea of the type of home that will work best for a specific dog. Plus, the dog doesn't have the added trauma of time in a shelter.

Havanese Rescue, Inc. does an amazing job.

I so wish I had found this forum long before I did. So much valuable info. Just want to thank you all for sharing your knowledge.
We are thankful Penelope is healthy so far, but knowing what I know now, if we ever get her a havanese brother or sister, it will be from a different breeder!

i was shocked to learn that the Amish society is very involved with puppy mill dogs. I didnt know this at first but when i started researching I found out. I wish that government would regulate this practice. Our last dog Abbey we believe came from a puppy mill and we loved her to death and she was great. Like Melissa above mentioned, your saving a dogs life dont feel bad. Here is a picture of Abbey, she passed away a couple of months ago.

Just found out today that it I likely our "breeder" gets her parents from the Amish. I have to let that go for now...live and learn. Our puppy is with us because she's meant to be our pup and we love her. We will take the best care of her that we can and she will have a fabulous life! When you know better you do better...and so that's where we are.
As a recovering worry wart myself, I am having to just focus on the here and now and not worry that Penelope may develop health issues or what not.

While I hope that everyone who knows better would not purposely get a puppy mill puppy (unless as a rescue), you are FAR from the first person to be taken in by puppy mill brokers... and you won't be the last. All we can do is educate people for their NEXT uppy decision. Right now, just enjoy your little girl! You are over the first hurdle with her, since so many puppy mill puppies are ill upon delivery. She sounds adorable and just perfect! Enjoy every moment!
