Potty issues... Marking?? UTI??

OK - my first (of hopefully few) problem...

It's been a little over a week now since Riley joined us and the potty training is going a bit slower than I hoped (or remembered from Molly!!). Over the weekend, he started what seems like "marking" - he goes just a drop on the carpet and was doing it out on the deck every few minutes!

His crate is dry though - if it was a UTI wouldn't he do this in his crate too? He's been staying dry in his crate at night (8 hours) and during the day (about 3 hours max) since Day 1.

Molly is most definitely being more dominant than him in play and food. Once I post pics of the two of them together, you'll see, he's usually in a submissive position when she's nearby! Could he be trying to establish some dominance by peeing around the house???

What do we do?
Thanks!

I would suspect you are right, although I can say that my girls trained quicker & had a lot less "accidents" than Logan.Dont know if it is a male thing, but when he came home, it was very difficult for the first 2 months. Yes, you are correct, if he had an infections, he would def. have gone in the crate. It is just a behavioral thing!!

UPDATE...

Well, yesterday, we were at our wits end (and it's only been a little over a week!)... Riley would go outside (we papertrain in a designated, blocked off area in the garage) and pee, then come in, play or whatever and then walk around and pee - but just a drop. He kept doing this, so we'd take him out again and nothing... This morning the same thing.

THEN!!!!

At lunch, dh came home and took him out (he's crated in the a.m. from about 9am to 11:30am) and he peed. A little later, dh was in the bathroom and heard Riley jet out through the doggie door (this leads to the potty area). He ran out there and Riley was peeing all on his own!!!! Of course, he made a BIG deal about it, treat and all! Riley then did this 2 more times even though he didn't have to go much.

Could these little accidents inside have been Riley figuring out when it is that he pees and gets a treat???

Can it be that easy???

You mean when he pees in the right place he get's a treat???? we had a hard time with Cash at first too-- we started keeping a log- he was pretty consistant - so we would know at around 2:15 start leading him to the right place and say "do your biz" when he went we made a huge deal. It also helps to catch them in the act of going in the wrong place- I think they are testing to see what is acceptable. if you catch Riley startle him with a firm NO and pick him up mid stream if nessasary and take him to the right place- and ask him to do his biz (or what ever you say) and then reward him- even if nothing comes out but he makes the pose.

Also a thought- is you space big enough so that he can pee seperate from where he poo's ---My boys will not pee if there is a poo there. So we have two trays set up.

keep us posted

Yes - I meant when he pees in the RIGHT place! LOL

We do pick him up when we catch him mid-pee, tell him firmly no and take him right out there - and say, Go potty, hurry up...

I didn't think about the space and any issues with peeing and pooping in the same area. We never had a problem with Molly with that, so we'll see.

He's still running through the door (we can't get Molly do this, but he CRASHES through! LOL) to go pee -sometimes not peeing at all - just to get the treat!!!
But, he's still had a few accidents, although less than over the weekend! I guess it's all part of his learning process!

Riley sounds a lot like Cash. And it sounds like we have the same set-up with the potty area in the garage with a doggy door. You'll be happy to know that Cash has not had an accident in over 3 month (except for one right after he was nuetered) --- he just turned 7 months. he too would go in and out of the door to get a treat. And my other one Jasper goes through the door to let us know he wants to go out! if we don't acknowlegdge this by taking him out he will stare us down, starting with my husband, if my husband doesn't budge he starts on me- just sit's there looking up at us with an eager look in his eye. eventually he grumbles a little and then hit us with his paw LOL. I don't adore my dogs do I---nah none of us do on the forum.
