Help! RVers need your advice

Baci is going on his first trip in our fifth wheel with us Saturday. I started to put some things in the camper today. It's raining here. They say a picture is worth a thousand words...

Part 2...

If you're an RVer, you probably know most people who RV try to keep the outside... Well... Outside! We take our shoes off before entering, etc.

So if you've got an RV and bring your Havs with you, how do you manage wet, muddy paws and undercarriage?

What a cute little rascal! Looks like you will need to bring along a really good hair dryer!

Have fun! We've been several times with Willow but haven't done so in nasty weather. We always take her Xpen. I also have about a 15 foot long line that I tie off to give her more freedom when not in her pen. I bring a little bed to use outdoors plus she has her crate to sleep in at night. I also bring sweaters and rainwear. We have had a time or two when the nights were chilly so I had her sleep with the sweater on. Of course a harness, identification tag, leash and poop bags. Then there are toys, food and dishes, water bottle, treats, grooming stuff, the phone number and location of an emergency vet, benedryl and dosage for any bee sting, a big cushy pillow for lounging on the floor inside the RV. I guess that's about all I bring! Oh, plus a towel to dry off with in case she does get wet. Where are you going?

We make a pen, using three ex-pens that is just a bit larger than our awning. Unless we are on a REALLY clean site, like clean gravel, or grass when it's not going to rain, we put down a patio rug. The dogs mostly stay on the rug... our chairs and their beds are on it. They will go off the edge to potty, but they don't get too dirty.

In REALLY bad weather, I keep them in to pee (litter box) When they need to poop, we let them out into the pen and pull back an edge of the rug under the awning. USUALLY they will use that dry area... They don't really WANT to get wet!

On the rare occasion when they get REALLY dirty (like when Dave walked Kodi in wet grass, then had him walk home on the red clay road on P.E.I.!!!) I have Dave hand the filthy one directly to me, and they go right into the shower for an undercarriage wash. If it's warm enough, I let them air dry, but I also bring a folding grooming table and a dryer along in case I need it. On short trips, we rarely need the grooming table, but we often go away for 3 weeks at a time, and then, no matter how dirty or clean the sites are, they are just GOING to need full baths at least once while we're gone... sometimes twice.

But I agree, a dirty dog never touches the floor in our RV!

I knew you would have great ideas Karen! Thank you. Looks like I'm going to have to scramble to get some ex pens.

We are going to Pensacola Beach RV Resort. Never been that far west on the panhandle before. This is going to be a totally new experience for us.

Baci has never been in the car for more than 1/2 hour either. And he still sometimes throws up. Let's hope riding in a big truck on the highway will be kinder to his stomach than riding around town in my manual transmission MINI Cooper!

And I keep remembering how our Corgi christened our previous fifth wheel when he was a puppy! I found out then that the beautiful, coordinated bedspreads that come with RVs CANNOT be washed!

Ha! i'm a Cooper owner too. both mine have been in the car or truck almost daily since day one. Kodi was 10 weeks old on his first camping trip, and I think Pixel was about 15 weeks old. They both love it. The RV is their second home.

One more thing I didn't mention is what to do about the stairs. The ex-pen can't go behind the stairs, of course, and you don't want to have to step over it at the bottom of the stairs. So we bought white plastic lattice at Home depot, and cut this into two sections. One fits behind the stairs, and the smaller piece fills the gap in case one of them falls off the back of the stairs. (otherwise, they'd be under the RV, and essentially loose. We use cable ties to attach the lattice to the ex-pens and just cut them when it's time to go home or move camp.

It is SO nice not to have to get dressed in the morning to take them out... We just open the door in pur PJ's send them out to their safe "yard" to potty, then they come right back in for breakfast and a snuggle!

^ Ditto this!

If I remember right, I think Baci is about the same age as my Lola. She's really starting to show her spunky, fun personality. I'm thinking this will be a fun trip for all of you.

EDIT: just saw Baci's b-day on your signature. Lola was born on April 19th, so they're just under two weeks apart. It will be fun watching Baci grow. Is he changing colors at all? Lola's head is getting darker brown, and the roots on her body are a bit lighter than what she is now.

Baci is and isn't changing color. If we cut his fur he would be noticibly lighter, if we cropped his fur close to his body he'd be the same color as the ends of his fur.

On another note, we're here in Pensacola Beach. The RV resort is lovely but we have 2 problems. The first is burrs from a plant in the beach. They're very sharp and really imbed themselves in Baci's fur. We've gotten to recognize them but not before we've had to cut out numerous burrs. Poor Baci!

The second problem is our RV neighbors. When we first got in I headed out with Baci on his 6' lead. The people right next door had their 2 big dogs on flexi leads and let them run right up to Baci. I scooped him up before they reached him, and the woman said, "Oh don't worry! They're sweet dogs and wouldn't hurt a fly!" I explained that a neighbor's German Shepherd had attacked my previous dog, despite the neighbor assuring us the dog was friendly to other dogs and people and
she said that her dogs are Alaskan Huskies and much nicer than German Shepherds. Just then her husband came out and asked if she was ready to go out. I asked if she crates her dogs and she was very offended. She said they're her babies and she would NEVER put them in a cage! We've been here since Saturday and the dogs have been tied out, away from each other, since we got here. They cry all the time. I don't know if they bring them in at night, because I go to bed early but they're tied up when I go to bed and they're there when I get up.
