When are you going to groom your dogs?

I don't know about you, but I've been getting this a lot lately, and am, quite frankly, surprised and taken aback. Complete strangers have been coming up to me on the street, at restaurants, at the dog park, or wherever, and usually first ask what kind of dogs I have, and then, almost immediately, ask when I'm going to groom them. When I say I just did or that I'm keeping them in long coats, I almost always get a negative reaction from just "a face" to at least half wanting to argue the point about how they'd look better and/or I'm actually treating them poorly. WTH? I'm always polite, but geez-o-peez! With the exceptions of early or late night neighborhood walks, my dogs are always combed out (I even keep a comb in the car for touch ups), clean, and looking good in public. Lola is only seven-months-old, so has that not-quite-there hairdo, but she always has a bow. Watson, my mixed breed boy, has his face and paws trimmed, but he has a beautiful, long, flowing coat. Before Lola, people just used to ask if Watson was a Tibetan Terrier or some kind of mini-Sheepdog, and leave it at that, so is this a Havanese thing? Do you guys experience this? I'm not quite sure how to handle some of the more extreme comments (you're making your dogs suffer type), and if I'm out for more than an hour with my dogs, I always get a least a few, and I'm starting to get snarky, which I'd like to avoid.

I can't TELL you how many times I've gone into our local, high-end, independent pet store with my guys, only to have someone (sometimes even a staff member who doesn't know us) ask, "Oh! they're cute! Are they here for "grooming" (AKA a "hair cut")?" Even when they are FRESHLY bathed. (and I bathe mine once a week, so they are never particularly dirty) Yeah, you've just got to let it slide right off. I point out that coated dogs don't need "hair cuts" if their coats are properly maintained!

Good answer, Karen. I've never had anyone criticize me for Tucker's coat, though most first-timers usually say something along the lines of "What a pretty dog! How much time does it take to keep him that way?!?!"

I get that a lot too, and I think that's fine. I wouldn't want anyone to consider a Havanese thinking these coats are effortless!

Maybe because you live in sunny Florida, people assume that the hair is torturing your dog. I would have a sweet, quick reply something like, "They're Havanese from "Havana", Cuba and their long coat actually protects them from the sun." Keep in mind that the average person seldom ever sees a long-haired dog. It's actually surprisingly unfamiliar to them and they don't quite know what to think. I wouldn't take it personally.

It's a little scary how many people don't KNOW where Havana is...

Well, here in South Florida, they actually do. I wouldn't, however, be surprised that they don't elsewhere.

I do say exactly that when that's the concern, which it sometimes is, and you're right, it would be silly to take it personally. If they're concerned about my dogs being too hot I'm usually appreciative that they're willing to say something. Those are the people who also tend to get it when I explain. What I'm finding more is that it's an aesthetic objection. They think the dogs look messy and uncared for. I also don't take that personally, but it is personal when I'm approached for that reason. But then again, I find that some neighbors and even some friends criticize me for taking my dogs to classes beyond basic puppy class with why don't you let your dog just be a dog comments. I guess everyone has opinions. Having only had stray cats who adopted me until the last two years, I just haven't been exposed to it before.

Ha! When I tell people that I still take Kodi (who is 6 1/2) for classes 3 times per week, they look at quizzically and ask, "He isn't trained YET?!?!"

Be glad you got your Havanese that recently. At least a LOT of people have heard of the breed now. When I got Kodi, people would ask what he was, and then when I told them, they'd ask, "So that's a cross between a Pekinese and WHAT?"
