Kubrick used to do this all the time! Sometimes I'd get up in the morning and think he peed on the bed... the licked spots were that big! If I caught him in the act, I would distract him with something else to keep him from doing it. If I didn't, though, then there was no point in reprimanding him or anything so I just let it go. I believe he did it out of boredom. Now that he's older he still will *occasionally* lick non-stop but if honestly doesn't last even half as long and occurs maybe 10% of the time compared to before. He just grew out of it!

I'm glad you started this thread - I've been meaning to myself. Abby doesn't really lick fabrics but she licks skin! She licks anything she has access to - feet, legs, hands, faces, etc., etc.......lol I don't like to be licked so it is driving me crazy. Does anyone have any ideas on how to break her of this? I hate to discourage her from being friendly to people, though, since she was so painfully shy before but how do I break her of her habit but not her spirit?

Kathie, does she know how to give kisses on command? Or the word "enough"? The way I taught the pups to stop kissing was to first teach them to kiss. This is something they picked up rather quickly, LOL! Then I taught them "no kiss" and give a treat when they stop. They learn it pretty quickly!

With "enough" I've taught them (mostly Hitch, actually) when I want them to get off me/keep away... when I say enough they know to step back and sit/go down and wait until I can pay attention to them again. I had to teach this to Hitch rather quickly because when he gets excited he can be very obnoxious (puppy behavior, really) so I had to teach him when enough was enough. He caught on to it very fast!

Milo is a major licker. He used to lick the sheets so much that I too thought he had wet the bed during the night. He doesn't seem to do that any more but he loves to lick skin and many times I have to stop him since he loves to do it as I'm trying to fall asleep.

Just Milo and me, and . . . Bailey makes three . . . until Ruby said, "hey, what about me?"

I had not thought about using the word "enough." Thanks Lina! I have been using "No licking" and take my hand away.

The "enough" command will probably end the licking with Dexter, because he knows this word for sure.

Sometimes Dexter will lick on fabrics, I just figure he is smelling something good, but if he keeps on licking and then chewing or biting on the item, I use the "Apple Spray" and I spray the spot on carpet or furniture. The "Apple spray" will stop Dexter for sure.

Kathie~ Shadow was just like that. She'd lick, lick, lick, everyone and anyone for as long as she was allowed. I put a sign by the front door that says:

WARNING! Dog can't hold its licker

Want to borrow it?

Leslie: I may need to borrow that sign.....lol

Lina: I'm like Linda - I've been saying "no licking" so I will try enough or unh uh (sp?) "Unh uh" or "eh" is what I say when I want her to stop other things - never thought of it for licking!

I've got a licker too. And if he isn't licking, he's gnawing on a toy or bone.

We have a house full of lickers -- 2 Havanese & 2 Papillons. Luckily, the Havs aren't quite as bad as the Paps most of the time. Every now & then Sophie will give a french kiss! She'll really nail you when you least expect it. Just lovely! My Paps have an obsession of my dad's nose & ears, when he's passed out on the couch. Its kinda of funny to watch because my dad will move his face side to side to get away from Gizmo but Gizmo follows his face so it doesn't work. Gizmo won't lick my mother's face, she's trained him not to. She's blown in his face enough that he doesn't even try to lick her.
