Do Havanese make good watch dogs?

Trick question! Sophie proves "not always" LOL

I love that she's a quiet girl though. And surprising since she is such a wild child otherwise.

Isn't that wonderful?! Tucker is the same way, although he will sit very alertly while he tries to figure out the noises. (He can't see out the window in front, here.) He just listens intently when there are footsteps. If the doorbell is rung or someone knocks he will occasionally give a single, soft "whoof."

BUT, if someone opens the screen door, like a delivery person leaving a package between the screen and front door, he will let loose with one long "arf-woof-growl-grumble!" that sounds like it is coming from a Rottweiler, and bounce off the couch to brace himself facing the door. I don't mind that at all.

So, Sophie's reaction might be different if she heard them trying to open the door.

Whimsy starts to run to the window to bark when she first hears the truck coming down the street about 2 blocks away! Ditto for the Fed-ex guy.

How old is Tucker? I had 2 longhaired doxies in my life in neither of them barked much either. And a Great Dane who rarely barked. People have come to the house many times and walked thru the door she races up and "talks" to them little yip, pant HI PEOPLE but doesn't do any real barking. Interesting because her Dad is a pretty big barker. I see so much of my Hallie in this little girl. I did notice that if someone comes to the door she knows she's quiet like this watching them out her window (I had that low window put in for my Hallie) until she recognizes them then she runs to the door and dances. I am sure that since I have just one dog at a time has much to do with the no barking, no one to feed off of.

LOL Whismy is keeping you safe from those bad packages!!

Wow! I can hardly believe it! Zoe is definitely an alert dog. But she stops after a few barks unless it someone she knows, then she gets all excited making all kinds of funny noises and wags her whole body.

Tucker is 8 years 10 months old. He loves it when someone he knows comes through the door, but he seems to know the difference between someone we know and someone we don't. He does the dance-thing, too, when they come in, and doesn't bark a bit.

Hmmm, maybe he can tell if I'm expecting someone, as opposed to just sitting on the couch. Maybe he thinks he needs to alert me then.

I'm just glad he's not a barker.

We live at the end of a long driveway, WAY away from the street. So you don't hear any vehicles until they are close to the house. Kodi has always barked when he heard a mail or UPS truck in the driveway, and now Pixel joins in. But they do pipe down when I tell thwm to.

Maybe Hallie is actually around and teaching Sophie. Who really knows!
