Nosework

Here is a video of Sophie in Nosework class this week. She gets so excited she never makes noises like she does when we first get into the building at nosework. She always leaps into everyones lap to say hi, we’ve decided to work with it instead of trying to stop it, as you can see as soon as she gets it out of her system she goes right back to work. There is one odor on one chair they keep moving the chair around. She works really hard and is doing great at the level she’s at. It's so interesting to watch her work the walls, etc to catch the odor and track it to source. My Hallie who did this and was blind sure taught me a lot since the factor of sight wasn't thrown into the equation and she went only by her nose.

Yeah Sophie, nicely done. She looks like she is really into it. After her meet and greet she gets right to work. I like that. She satisfies her social side and then does her job. Good on ya Sophie.

That was fun to watch, and it could have gone on for awhile and I would have been glued. I don't understand the chair moving, though. Doesn't Sophie just watch where the chair is moved to, and could go to it?

She is a very social girl, and how sweet that the other folks allow her to greet them so enthusiastically!

We are so lucky to have these instructors they are incredible. Nosework is a great sport, my Hallie rocked it totally blind it was her favorite thing.

Sheri when they move the chairs, an empty chair is moved the same time as the one with odor on it, and if you watch close you will see the instructor moving the empty chair will make some noise with it, bang it on the floor etc to get the dogs attention on it while the one with odor is being placed. Sophie pretty much went right to the spot the previous hide had been most of the time. It's also interesting to watch them trying to get to source, the odor will move on any air current and can pool against walls etc so they might catch the odor on one side of the hide but not the other. sophie went behind the chair on the one go because she was "in odor" but had to go beyond it to catch it and track it back to the chair.

TMI! But really fascinating stuff.

By golly, that Sophie really gets excited about her playtime! There should be a law against one Havanese having so much fun!

Ricky loves nosework too. His behavior is much like Sophie's when he is tracking. We play the "find it" nosework game at least twice a day inside our house when we hide his meals a different place in the house at each meal. Ricky has to remain in a sit/wait while I wander around the house with his bowl. Once the bowl is hidden, I give him the "find it" release cue and he takes off like a rocket, paws skidding on our hardwood floors, and he always finds his food, sometimes hidden in very challenging places.

These Havanese dogs just make me laugh!
