Need help on outdoor exercise pen!

I brought Belle home last Friday. So far things are going well. Although, I am feeling a little overwhelmed with all of the new responsibilities--potty training, grooming, puppy training classes, etc., etc. I love her dearly and she is a wonderful puppy--so loving and affectionate, and very smart! I know part of my stress is my desire to do everything right.

So, one of the things I want for her is an outside exercise area. I don't have a fenced yard, so right now I take her out on a leash every hour or so, so she can go potty and get some play time outside in the fresh air. She loves being outside, but I can't spend as much time as I'd like with her outside. I need some time indoors to do things too. Also, I have to admit that I sometimes just need a short break. I've been getting estimates for having a fence installed--but I'm finding out that the prices are way beyond my means. Do any of you use outside exercise pens? And, if so, can you recommend good ones that have enough area, so Belle can really run around and enjoy her time outdoors. Thanks!

Nancy

Nancy, Before we even brought home our first Havanese pup, we knew we needed a fenced in yard so bit the bullet and paid the $$$$. If you own y our own home and can do it, it's wnderful! I wish we would have done it sooner, because we really love it that much! I hope someone chimes in who has experience with outdoor pens for you because these little guys sure love to run. I wanted to say your new pup is beautiful! I love her markings!

I did have expens in my back yard ( we had a fence too) but when Benji and Lizzie were just little pups, I never left them unsupervised. We had an indoor expen that was connected to the outdoor ex-pen by a doggie door installed in a wall. In the indoor ex-pen set up I had their crate, water and food bowl, and toys. So when you can't supervise them or when you need a break, the puppy goes into the ex-pen.

I would look for 4 feet tall expens with 8 panels that is covered from the top ( your will have to order the separate panels to cover the top) so that the puppy is safe from critters as well as other possibilities (strangers or neighbors getting to the pup when you can't supervise). Some Havs can climb out of shorter exp-pens. Lizzie was just 13 weeks old and she was a great escape artist.

Diane Klumb's book The Havanese has great description on ex-pen set up.

I have attached the pictures of my set up when we got Benji. Later we extended our deck and the entire outdoor ex-pen sat on the deck. The white frame at the rear is the doggie door installed in the wall. My husband built it. We used a heavy duty shower curtain to cover the panels during winter time. It kept the enclosed area dry. I left a pad out there for them to use when they didn't want to venture out in the rain. We always locked the outdoor ex-pen door so they couldn't go out in the yard (we had cayotees, racoons etc as well as eagles that could easily pick up the little Havs).

Benji loved to sit out in the outdoor ex-pen and watch the cows grazing in the meadows in our back yard.

I hope this helps.

I just remembered Susan (mckennasedona) had a great set up for outdoor ex-pen connected to the interior of her home. She had a fenced yard but her set up was really nice.

Best, Poornima

This was expensive for me, but worth it, if I can get Tucker to use it without me being out with him, for when I'm gone long hours. I have a 3 ft fenced yard, not enough to protect him from thieves or eagles, either.

Installed doggy door through wall in utility room. Put up dog run outside it, measures 6x12, covered with panels and clear plastic, plus some odd shapes that add a bit. I had to pay for both the supplies AND hire someone to put it in, so it would be a lot cheaper if you had someone that could put it in for you in the family! (Costs for all of it: $1,600!)

Now, if I could just get him to go out the doors by himself! He will only go out if I go around and call him out. Once outside he'll potty there, but...sigh....

Thanks, everyone! You all have some great fenced areas--very creative too! I have a couple more places coming to give me estimates next week--hoping I can find something reasonably priced. Wish I was handier, but, whatever I have done pen-wise or fence-wise, I'll have to pay someone to do. Love the all the pictures of your little ones too--they are all so cute!

Nancy,
When we first brought home Casper we didn't have a good area either...back yard has pool and front yard not fenced. So, we went to Home Depot and bought that 36" fence and some stacks and made him a little play, potty area. Casper hated it without us right there with him, but it did get him outside. I will see if i can find pictures of it for you. In the front yard, now I set up the large exercise fencing - (you can get at Petco) for them to be in when I do my yard work in the front.

Lynn,
No, as I mentioned, he'll only go out it I go around where he can see me first. He doesn't like to go out by himself. I don't know if he'll get over it...but, I'm hoping that he might think of this option if I'm not around and he needs to go potty. It was an expensive experiment, otherwise!

Thanks, Lynn! I'd love to see a picture, if you have one. That sounds like something that would work and maybe not too expensive. I understand about all of these wonderful dogs wanting to be close. Belle is the same way. She is asleep at my feet right now, but will wake up and move with me if I go to another place in the house. We just came in from a romp in the leaves--her favorite game at the moment is "catch the blowing leaves." The only problem is that there are just too many for her to get them all, so she really wears herself out trying--and loves every minute of it. Then, she comes into the house and crashes.
