Feeding advice

I am really sad and confused at the moment and needing some good advice. I really want to do the best for Scooby. I am feeding him Acana dog food with dried chicken or duck as his treats (not really a biscuit dog)
He eats his food when really hungry. I have tried homecooked but got a little scared about making sure he got all the nutrition he needs and he was getting a runny bum.
Right now Scooby has severe tearing. Really hurts him when I comb him out and he really fights me. I try to damp him down with water but does not really help much. Also his fur is very dry and brittle.
I posted on another forum and was told I need to get him off kibble and onto raw. But I know my DH would have problems with e-coli and salmanella (not sure about spelling) as I have a almost 5 year old and they are always together. I live in Canada so eating outside is not going to be an option once the snow falls.
Any ideas how I can help my sweet little guy. I am feeling like I am failing him.

Hi Jo,

I have been feeding Beamer Raw food for over 2 years now and have never had any problems with e-coli or salmanella. I can understand how it might gross you out or whatever, but I think its worth a try! He might love it or hate it (at first)... What brands do you have avaliable to you in Alberta?

I am not sure, what do you use? Do you have little kids? and how messy is it?
I am so confused. I have read so many articles of how much harm kibble causes and I feel huge guilt now.

Honestly, I would not feed raw with kids in the house. It's one thing for adults who know how to be careful and clean, but it's another with a small child. I don't understand why you can't just get Scooby (love the name btw) on a very good kibble like Orijen, Innova Evo, Fromm's etc? You don't *need* to feed raw for your dog to be healthy and have a nice coat and anyone who tells you that is lying. Both my dogs are on kibble (and have been their whole lives) and have great coats with no tear staining problems. They aren't white, but you can still tell when a dog has tear stain issues on a dark face by the reddish stains, which neither of mine have around the eyes.

If you're having trouble cleaning the eyes (you should do this at least once a day to avoid the matted mess that's causing Scooby to get upset), you can try a facial wash like the Blueberry Facial Scrub a lot of the members here use. That may be able to help. There's also other types of things you can use to help out with tear stains, but I personally wouldn't use those treatments unless it was very very bad.

Thank Lina,
I was feeding orijen but was told Acana (same company) was the same other than a little less protein. I was ok with this as Orijen is a little high in protein. Maybe I should switch back. What do you use for treats?
I will look out for the blueberry scrub I was given a good site In canada I will check if they have it.
TY

I don't know what is available to you in Canada, but I feed my boys Fromms. Brady is white and gets very little staining. What he does get is around his mouth, not his eyes. I mix the Fromms with a little boiled chicken and they love it. I have two very good eaters though. I feed treats too. I usually use Buddy Biscuits, Real Meat treats, or Grandma Lucy's. I tried raw for a little when I just had Brady, but it just didn't work for us.

Jo , with the dry fur , something is missing possibly. If you want to spend $25 you will get a professional analysis from Sabine at Better Dog Care. It is the best money I ever spent on Molly. She will sent you a detailed questionaire online which you fill out and email back. Every dog is different. We switched to canned food which is a step up from kibble and is hassle free. Three times the price but when you see how much better it is ,you might be tempted like we were. Atl least check out her site . Her consultation site is here http://www.betterdogcare.com/?page=about To find her other site just google Dog Food Project.

We add fish oil to breakfast each day, Scooby's weight will determine how much to add, and my dogs love it! They're all on Merrick Before Grain kibble mixed with a little bit of Merrick canned food. If he has a "runny bum" (cute phrase!) you can also add probiotics to his food, or try a bit of canned pumpkin. Not pie filling, just plain pumpkin. I used Sabine for a consult and was happy with the info she provided.

I was so stressed over what my dogs were eating and made myself crazy, try not to do that!

For treats we use chicken jerky, we call it "puppy crack" because they love it so much! I also buy Natural Balance biscuits because they're good quality and the dogs love all of the flavors. If Scooby doesn't like biscuits you could also use bits of apple, bits of baby carrots, or boiled chicken.

What shampoo and conditioner are you using? That could be contributing to the dry coat as well? I wouldn't try to brush him when he's wet, that makes it harder to do my 3.

Good luck, try not to worry!

Thank you for all your support. Its so nice to know you are all there to help
I should do the analysis Dave. I will check out all the foods you use and see what is available near me.
Probably is the shampoo also as its just a puppy conditioning one from walmart. Any recommendations?
Also any one in Canada know where to get the "Blueberry scrub" from.
Thanks everyone

I use Tropiclean shampoo and conditioner and love it, it smells so good! I use a Chris Christensen conditioner that I dilute with water for a final rinse and they're all so soft! I try to use good quality stuff because I bathe them so much. If you do a search for "shampoo" on the forum you'll find lots of recommendations.
