Microchipping Pros and Cons

I have microchipped my dogs and cats when we had them for years. My vet practices holistic medicine and isn't comfortable microchipping Rex, he weighs 6 lbs now. I won't have him neutered until he is more than 12 months old. I don't keep collars on the Havs because it really messed up their coats. Leo was chipped when he got his 1 year old rabies vaccine. He wasn't neutered until he was 1 1/2 yrs old. I googled microchipping pros and cons and now I am uncertain about chipping Rex at all but also intend to keep him in a long coat so what to do???

After having my escapee cat disappear and be returned to me through Animal Control because she was microchipped, I'm pro microchip. Though I never plan to have my dogs apart from me, life happens and you never know.

Molly was chipped by her breeder before I got her.

I didn't know there is a downside to microchipping. Microchips are required here locally.

I am pretty conservative when it comes to veterinary proceedures, and I am willing to take the VERY SLIGHT chance of a negative outcome from a microchip for the benefit of having a permanent ID attached to my dog. I put collars with tags on my dogs EVERY time they are in the car, and whenever they are off my property. HOWEVER, things go wrong, and collars can get lost. A microchip is much less likely to go astray than a collar. (Well, it can move around, but have it checked yearly at your dog's well pet visit, and you should be fine) two of mine are already microchipped, and the third will be when she is spayed.

Ok I will get Rexy microchipped. I do feel better knowing that there is a permanent connection to me. So grateful for this community.

just yesterday read an article in Dogs Naturally by L.C. Kelley on studies coming out recently on possible behavior affects associated with microchips. I found this on his site . There have also been possible cancer suggestions too. More research definitely needs to be done. Here's his article Lee Charles Kelley - Natural Dog Training in New York City

Two of mine were microchipped by their breeder. I am not microchipping Blossom for a number of reasons. But basically, I just don't like the idea of a tracking device being inserted into an animal. No matter what the science or benefit is. I am dead set against electronic tracking of any kind. Also, while I have personally witnessed a dog being returned to its owner because of the chip, I have seen many more returned without a chip simply through Facebook networking. In fact, a friend of mine found her dog through Facebook, even though she was microchipped. The people that found her didn't think to take her in to check. Its definitely a personal decision.

Argh! So much guilt! So suggestions for the type of collar that will cause the least damage to a full coat?

Collars and full coats don't get along.....I use Alvalley slip leads. But they do nothing for identification.
