Exclamation HRI needs help

Sorry I know I am posting this multiple times but I want to make sure everyone see it. Even if you can't do it maybe you know someone who can.

HRI needs your help!

We desperately need foster homes in Missouri, Illinios, Indiana, Ohio,

Pennsylvannia, and Wisconsin. Unfortunately this is an area of many

puppy mills. In order for HRI to help these poor defenseless dogs we

must have foster homes in a reasonable travel distance. The farther

these darlings have to travel the more trauma we add to their little

lives. So if you can foster or know someone who can please send them

to the HRI site to sign up.

Thank you all for your help. These wonderful, loving dogs need us!

How to care for a puppy mill dog...

It can be done...here is a very good article of what they have been through and what it takes. But the rewards are immense.

http://www.nowisconsinpuppymills.com...survivors.html

Some of them are easier than others...I hope some day we never have this challenge to deal with.

No more puppy mills. No more pet shop dogs.

I didn't just get havanese, I got a lifestyle!

Luna, I am in northwest Arkansas. Not too far from MO and all the puppy mills in the southwestern part of the state. Let me discuss it with DH and get his input on it and I'll get back to you about applying to foster.

I'm already a foster home for two rescues (JRTs and a mixed breed rescue) but just wanted to add my two-cents here. If you can just take one dog one time, it makes a difference. Yes, there will be rough patches. Yes, you will fall in love and want to keep them. But seeing them go to a new home and knowing that it wouldn't have happened without you is worth gold. (In 5 years with probably 30+ fosters I have only "flunked" once and that was b/c the dog was not adoptable to an average pet home and really needed a strong alpha leader and a job (that's Bruce, my Cairn Terrier).)

Thanks Linda for posting that mill dog link. Margaret you are so right. The feeling you get from knowing you made a difference is amazing. Sally thank you so much. HRI would love to have you and Hubby on board.

Is HRI still sticking to not paying money for mill dogs? I understand it's a complicated issue, but I hope that's the case.
We have auctions regularly here in my town, where a "famous" no kill shelter consistently purchases all the dogs, putting money in the mill owners pockets and sending more young dogs to a life of misery.

I sure hope I pass my house inspection on Sat to be a volunteer!

HRI does not pay for mill dogs. We don't want to add to the millers wallets. I understand why people do, since their desire is to save the poor dogs, but HRI does not.

I am sure your home visit will be fine Beverly. It is nerve racking though.

I have a running debate with a friend who runs a rescue. She will "rescue" (i.e., BUY) a pregnant dog at auction on the theory that she is saving Mom and the puppies. That's true. But in my mind that just creates incentive to breed more dogs. After all, if there is a demand, there will be a supply.

I'm fostering the cutest who-knows-what puppy right now. Mom and the 6 puppies were dumped in the drop box of a rural Ohio shelter when they were 1 week old. The shelter's policy is to euthenize all puppies unless a rescue takes them. Fortunately someone happened upon them and brought them to safety.

I live in PA and applied to HRI months ago and never heard a word. I think they are very unorganized, I have 2 dogs, am on the Board of a dog club, have fostered many times before for a local rescue group and my dog has 13 agility titles-so I do like to train. Perfect candidate.

I would apply again. My guess is that your application was lost in the shuffle. I've never known a rescue to turn down a foster home, nevermind what sounds like an ideal one.
