I just discovered something about Milo

Now that I'm "walking" Milo around the yard I've made a discovery that may wind up helping me with my other ongoing issue with my little love. He does not go out to make. He goes out to play. He goes out to RLH. He obviously goes out to dig, but the one thing he does not consider in his desire to be out there is doing his business.

I walk, and I walk, and I walk and he looks up at me lovingly (most of the time) and does . . . not much of anything. The others definitely have an agenda when they get out there, but Milo? I'm beginning to trace the whole thing back to when I first got him. He was doing relatively well with his training till I got sick (unfortunately three weeks after I got him). He was then completely off his routines, first being left in the house with the others and my son would come over to let them out and feed them. If he was off schedule -- oh well. After that he was crated in my son's house because they had a cat and they didn't want him upset with the canine intruder. So poor Milo didn't know which end was up.

When I got home from a week in the hospital I was in no shape to do much of anything other than the absolute basics. By the time Bailey arrived I was able to give him the time he needed, and his nature was such that he loves to be clean. He was trained by the time he was a few months old. Easy! But Milo had so many obstacles to overcome in his young life. He lived with his breeder for 5 1/2 months and was suddenly ripped away from everything he knew, dragged away from a peaceful existence on a farm to a cacophonous life in the big city.

He and I both have to start from the beginning. It's back to basics and I have so much to learn. I'm so grateful for getting the second chance to do it right.

Then again, he's not used to being on the leash. Give him a little time with it. Gryff knows exactly what to do when we go out on the leash. I tell him to go potty and he does. If I have him off leash in the yard, he will usually run around like a maniac and he might go if I ask him to. I think it's really just what they are used to.

Geri, did you just start 'walking' him using his leash? Sometimes when they are use to doing their business being 'free' to roam around ~ they don't want to do it on a leash. It may take him a few days to find his place and know he can stop and pee. I'm thrilled you have that boy back also. I know you can train him if you go back to the basics and confine him and watch like a hawk. Havs are so smart and I'm sure he will 'get the message' soon if you work with him. He is one of the cutest Havs I've ever seen so I hope you can get the fence fixed so he can't get out and worry you to death again!!

It may be a blessing that you want to reevaluate what is going on in that little mind. Back to the basics is not a bad thing. A new bonding time for you and Milo, he may not need it as much as you do. We may subconsciously give off negative energy as Cesar Millan says. I know I was doing that at times with Galen, just knowing she would wait until she is back in side to poop or pee. It has been so much better in the last couple of weeks when I went back to “having a party’ when she does her business outside.

I don’t know if this will help or not but a very brisk walk always puts Galen in the mood.
Another Cesar hint, back in crate for 30 minutes after eating then to the outside for business.

Good luck and enjoy the opportunity you have to work with Milo again.

My walking him on a leash for any extended period of time is new so maybe that is part of the problem. He's walking very well on it though, not pulling and staying at my side. I do carry something in my pocket to give him as I make a big fuss when he does go. Thankfully my handyman will be over in about an hour or so to fix the fence and holes. I'm exhausted. I was out "walking" him at 5 this morning. Not fun! But otherwise he seems to be sticking close to me. He's just right of my foot as I write this.

Geri, I do think this is a blessing in disguise. I a chance to re-bond with Milo. Cash has no problem going out back to do his biz. But Jasper only uses the back yard when he really has to go. He much prefers to grace other peoples lawns with his biz and will wait and stare at us to take him for a walk. I tell you this, because you will be much happier if once the fence is fixed you can just open the door and he knows what it is meant for him to do.

Sounds like you've got a plan, backed up with some deep thinking. I am sending you cyber energy and patience!

Since you are figuring things out, I'll mention what I do with Tucker that has worked well, kind of like Ivy/Gryff.

When I need Tucker to go potty, the fastest way for me is to take him on a brisk 10-15 minute walk down the sidewalk. I make him walk/jog without stopping for the trip away from the house and when I let him stop and sniff around then he almost always is anxious to potty and do his business. Then, on the walk back I let him go at a bit easier pace incase he has any left to mark a bush or two at the neighborhood "pee-mail" spots.

This is definitely a work in progress. My handyman will be back later this afternoon to fix everything. He seems to think what we did last time is the best solution. That is to get one by fours to lay across the bottom, blocking access to the whole area. By tonight (hopefully) I won't have to be so frantic. However, Milo is being much more mellow today. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try to see what works best for my little hobo.
