Picking up crap and chewing/eating it

Hey all.. Beamer is ALWAYS picking up stuff off the lawn and patio.. or anywhere actually. Grass/sticks/gravel/etc.. he keep on puting it in his mouth and chewing it.. and maybe eating some?

Do all of your guys do this to??

I need to get him to stop, but obviosuly have not taught him a 'drop it' command yet.

My little guy has grass, leaves, sticks and even small rocks in his mouth the second he hits the great outdoors. We're constantly pulling stuff out of his mouth. He even ate a cicada the other day (we've pulled a bunch of them away from him too, but missed that one). Yuk!

Dont worry - it is also normal for them to do that. My guys have eaten so much outside, some of which I dont even want to know about!!! If they eat too much or something they shouldnt, they will throw it up. Then go along their merry way & start over again.
There are two commands you can teach. One is Leave it! which you use before the actually get to the item, and the other is "drop it" once they already have it. It only works about 80% of the time with Logan and I have to be close to him for him to drop it, but he does. If it is too yummy though, he will run away so he can eat it before I get to him

My dogs are always picking up leaves, sticks, mulch, flowers (grumble, grumble) and they love if they can get one of my Crocs or a gardening glove as a bonus.

When you said he was picking up crap and eating it, I thought you were being serious. Just be glad he isn't eating poop.

That's what I thought when I read the subject line too, Melissa.

Pepper does this, too. Usually if I scold him and tell 'no' or "pie-pie" (long story but it means "trash" in our house) he'll drop it and move on, but not always.

His favorite things to pick up are sticks and pebbles. I'm not worried about the sticks, but I try to keep him from swallowing any pebbles.

He grabbed a few bird feathers this morning and that freaked me out only because I worry about mites or other parasites.

Laurie's right..."leave it" and "drop it" are two great commands.

One of MacGyver's favorites is the dead frogs smashed in the road. I have to be extra vigilant after it rains.

That's exactly what Max does.....he's a quick little fella....and he will scoot away if he really doesn't want us to get it away from him. He does have a thing for "crap", but he's very particular.....it has to be natural dried in the sun crap......I guess these guys have a good sense of smell, because he can find that stuff in the strangest places.

It is so funny that you would tell that story. The other day I had all three out for a walk & Logan was lagging behind. I turn around & he had a dead, flat frog in his mouth!! Thank god the "drop it" command worked. In our family we call them sail frogs!! cause you could throw then & they sail thru the air
