So, it's going to be a while...

So after taking in all of the awesome advice an input from all of you, I have decided to make a change in my plans to get a Havanese puppy. As some of you may know, I was planning on getting one this Summer 2010... but after thinking about it long and hard and wanting the absolute best life for my puppy - I have decided to wait longer.

I realized that after I had decided that I wanted a Havanese, all I really thought about was everything I could do to make him/her happy and give them a perfect life. I really didn't think about all the other things I wanted to do that would make ME happy. However, thanks to all of the advice I now realize that there are other things I want to accomplish before I embark on this very important endeavor of getting a Havanese pup.

I have talked with my boyfriend about it, and we have now turned our pup fund into a vacation fund. We will hopefully be vacationing in Europe within the next 18 months, and I'm so excited! Hopefully after that time has passed, my work schedule will be more flexible so that I can work a bit from home and spend much needed time with my puppy. This was a very hard decision to make, as a Havanese is all I thought I wanted. I just don't know if I'll be able to give them the life they deserve right now with my schedule, and with my other desires. Anyway, the good thing is that I think I'm making the right choice even though I'm going to have to delay something I want terribly bad. Oh well, it'll just give me even more time to learn about this special breed. I'll still be hanging around here, if that's alright... just to keep asking questions and absorbing information.

Sorry for the long post... thanks for everything by the way!

Congratulations on a very mature decision. It's not easy to put the needs of a puppy ahead of your own desires and I commend you for it. When you're yound is the time to get out and explore (like great trips to Europe!) - there'll be lots of time to have puppies, kids, etc.

Best wishes - and please continue to hang around. This is a great site to learn about the breed - I observed for several months while making the decision about adding a Hav to our household...

Glad that you got a lot of input that helped you here!! You are so young, I think you are making a great choice...plenty of time later to tie yourself down, this time of youth is the best time to travel and explore life.

Please do stay in touch and read--you'll be well prepared when you do decide it's time to get your pup.

And, your post wasn't too long...for us? You were kidding, right? We love info! Ha!

Yeah, this was a very hard decision to make and it makes me pretty sad in some ways ... *sigh* Well, I guess if I hang around here and research for another year or two then I might as well be an expert lol

Enjoy the planning for your trip and trips. I'm sure you'll look back in a few years and realize how much fun you both had traveling the world. Then you'll decide it's time to settle down a bit with kids or a Hav or BOTH!!

I researched and prepared for over 2 years at my age, (I'm 53 now.) Sometimes the timing just isn't right, and it is sure a lot more enjoyable when the timing IS right. Gives you more time to save up after you have some of your wonderful trips, too!

Like Sheri I've been reading and researching Havs for a number of years (about 5) before the timing was right. I'm 55 and just retired so am home and can take on the puppy issues much easier than trying to work and train.... It's working well for us and I'm really glad I waited...

I think you did the right thing! I have wanted a dog since I left for college and ended up waiting until I was married and 32!

Sound like you made the right decision at this time in your life, but someday you will be a wonderful Hav mom!
