New member and Winter Coat Question

Hi, I'm new to forum and new to having a Havanese pup. I'll be getting my 4 month old pup (Sammy) on Thursday.

I live in the NE on Long Island, NY and I'm curious about going for walks in the cold. I've read that the Havanese coats are designed for cooling in the heat rather than providing warmth in the cold. Assuming that is the case, at what temperature would a Havanese need a coat/sweater?

Hi Mark and Sammy. Welcome to the forum. I think it depends on the dog. Some Havs (like mine) love the cold and have little tolerance to heat. While others do get cold. Sammy will let you know if he is cold.

Welcome Mark. I live very close to you and have found my boys prefer to be out there, whatever the temperature without coats or sweaters. He will indeed let you know if he's cold. I must admit I sometimes put sweaters or raincoats/coats on them more for my comfort level than theirs.

Good luck with your adorable puppy.

Welcome Mark and Sammy,
I have three Havanese, one of which we just adopted in September, so this will be our first winter with her. The cold doesn't really bother my Sunshine and she would be in the snow all day if we let her. Skippy, on the other hand is the complete opposite. He gets cold as soon as the temperature drops and has a sweater on all winter. By the way, he Loves his sweaters, when I pull one out of the closet, he gets all excited and runs up to me. We'll see what Jaime prefers very soon! I know when Skippy is cold because he shakes alot. We have a heated pillow for him that he enjoys, as well. I'm sure Sammy will let you know when the time comes.
Good Luck and Congratulations!
Patty

Welcome to the Forum, we live in the South so no clothes for my girls. Smarty prefers the winter to summer, she never seems to get cold. This is our first winter with Galen so we will see how she does on our really cold days.

Welcome!

Welcome Mark, Sammy is adorable!

I live in NJ and when it's cold enough for me to wear gloves, I put a coat on Piper. She doesn't seem to mind the cold too much but I kind of use that as a guideline.

I ordered a little suede coat for my DD's little dog for Christmas. Matilda has no hair to speak of and lives in Wales. The coat arrived today and is cute as it can be. Seems very well made.
