FaceBook virus

Warning emailed to everyone in our company yesterday. Take it for it's value to you. I'm not a techy so I have no more information.

Important Facebook Virus Update – Read Entire Message:

The recent virus we have been experiencing is directly related to Facebook and is being propagated from their servers onto our system. Our enterprise anti-virus software Symantec has identified it as “koobface” and quarantined it. We have also researched suggested removal tips and have a solution in place for our equipment (read below for removal tips on your equipment).

To help ensure our network security from further Facebook virus attacks we are taking the following steps:
· Blocked the Facebook site for our campus.
· Blocked Facebook.com and Facebook email through our Spam filter MX Logic.

Here are some suggested removal tips for people who are using personal equipment:
· Run a full anti-virus scan
· Download a free version of Malware Bytes and run full scan
· Change Facebook password
· Clean temporary internet files

Thank you for your patience and cooperation,

Our local news has featured the virus problems on FB many times, but the viruses don't come from Facebook itself (at least not yet, so far), but from the applications that people sign up to use. Anyone can make an application (just look at the spelling on some of those quizzes!) and post it to FB and get others to use it and some people have malicious intentions. That's why you have to give permission for the applications to access your info before you can use them.

I rarely open the applications, but when I do, I make sure others have been the guinea pig before me. If several of my contacts have been using it for a while without problem then I may give it a shot if I'm still interested. Patience is definitely a virtue when it comes to FB apps!

That's what I do too, Kimberly. And even then! I don't like applications as they can be so invasive.

My techie daughter kept saying that about Macs--until she got the virus from hell--on her mac laptop. The only reason Macs don't get as many viruses is because they are not used in the business world where hackers love to lurk. Be careful out there.

I have a MAC too, but that doesn't stop you from being phished! I got phished on FACEBOOK and that's why I can't stand it. They hacked my password, then my email, then amazon, then ran up my credit card.

Macs can be and are used in the business world, just not as widely as PC's. Viruses are usually geared toward PC's because more people have them.
