to replace Cash's squirrel or not?

Cash's pet squirrel showed up at of all places Whole Foods. For those of you that don't know the story...Cash adopted Squirrel from Jasper the first day he arrived. Squirrel is a Folkmania hand puppet for children that we got to bring Jasper out of his shell and learn to play. Well Jasper never took to squirrel (he loved the silly little frog prince hand puppet that came with his blanky, showed all sorts of dirt, and silly me threw away and could not find again) But Cash uses Squirrell as a security blanket. He always places it in the same position and sucks on the tail. Squirrel has been washed a million times, and is looking a little sad. But he is still in tact. In fact Cash destroys most plush toys ripping out the stuffing...but squirrel has survived 3 years of intense loving! So the question is...will Cash like and adopt a new squirrel or does mom just have to put up with old squirrel hanging out with us all the
time?

Attachment 26654

other cute squirrel stories: Cash runs and gets squirrel when anyone comes to the door. mind you he does not give the person his prize he just keeps it with him for security or to show the person what he has. Cash knows he can not take squirrel outside (OMG what if squirrel got lost) he tries everytime, but drops it by the door when told...when on occassion he sneaks squirrel out Jasper tackles him to release squirrel for me. Also if we take squirrel and "play" with him and keep him from Cash, once Cash gets him back...he shows him who is boss by tossing and shaking but finally he manipulates him in the same position and starts sucking until his eyes close and falls asleep.

If he's anything like a kid he won't take to the new one. My son Austin had a stuffed elephant for years that he lost and we found a new one but he wouldn't touch it. Something about the way it feels after being worn in and I think they like the smell. (Ewww!) You could buy it and see what he does but my guess is you're stuck with the yucky one.

OMG, Cash and squirrel are adorable together.......just like a blankie. I wouldn't replace squirrelie, but I would buy him a new one as well to see if he would take to it.

Oh, Cash is soooo cute with that squirrel. I would say buy a new one if you're really concerned that it may just fall apart someday and keep the two close together. Maybe by the time his original falls apart, he will get used to the second one. I actually did this with my son. He had a soft baby boy that he was given as an infant, and I bought three more because he was so attached to it. We lost one, one fell apart, and I have saved the remaining two.

I'd buy another one to experiment with. I have 2 Lions for Tucker just for this reason. After he had adored his first one for a year, (I gave it to him when he first arrived and he's always slept with it since,) I found the same one in a store again and bought it. Then I kind of rotated them until the "new" one started feeling a little comfortable for Tucker. Now I keep one as backup, just like for a toddler--what if we lose one?!

He likes to have Lion in his car seat when we travel for hours, too. My mom thinks I'm a bit overboard about Tucker.

Cash is so cute with his squirrel!!

It's so cute the way they "bond" to certain toys. We have a squirrel here too that is so precious that they both must have it at once. It led to some really nasty spats. So we bought another one, thinking that each pup could have its own squirrelly. Nope. Pixie claims both and will fight Rascal "to the death" for them! So they are both in a drawer now. When Rascal had to go to the vet recently to have a baby tooth removed, Pixie got to have squirrel all to herself for a whole day. Bliss!

I would also buy Cash a second squirrel and try to rotate or have both out for awhile.

My youngest son got a frog blanket (a stuffed head and a small blanket piece attached) when he was little. He fell in love with it and could not sleep without it. One time we went to my Mom's and FORGOT the frog blanket at home. (Mom is in Illinois-6 hrs.away) so.......he was crying and throwing a big hissy fit (OMG-It was awful) and my Mom went and bought him a new one. He rejected it at first but given no choice he took it. Now--remember Robbie is autistic so things are more "intense" and "routine" then normal children......so now--he sleeps with BOTH frog blankets...and believe me......we DO NOT forget a frog blanket!!!! He stills prefers the old one with the old worn out satin edging, but he will take the other if he has to. He also has a fleece car blanket that a very dear person made him and he is super attached to that.He must have it on now matter how many other blankets he has----doesn't matter--he wants the car blanket! I thought it was the fleece--and made him a new one (different print)for just in case he throws up or pees on it and I need a last minute change out for the wash machine......and let me tell ya-----that was a BIG NO!!! Hopefully Cash is not autistic (I'm kidding) and is more adaptable then Robbie...but buy that handsome dude another squirrel Missy or you'll be kicking yourself in the hiney later!!!

I like Gina and Sherri's suggestions - get a second (or third) and start to gradually rotate the new ones in. It will probably take him a while to warm up to the new squirrel, but definitely good to have a replacement if the old one does fall apart someday.

Very cute photo, I would buy the 2nd squirrel, for a back up. Keep it with the old, worn and true one for the smell, maybe even wash then togather next time.

Smarty adores her AKC fox, but Galen has just about did it in.

I agree with everyone.....lol Buy the squirrel while you can find one so you can start getting it broken in! He looks so adorable snuggled up with his squirrel!
