DNA Test Kit?

I recently rescued my 6 month old puppy Sapphire and she was listed as a Havanese/Maltese mix. I would like to verify this by having a DNA Test done on her. Has anyone used them before? If so what brand? How accurate was it?

I wouldn't spend the money. I've had multiple friends use them, and all of them got wild results. One friend's dog is very large and bulky and looks to be about 3/4 lab. When they got his results, they said he was more Maltese than Labrador, and seeing this dog, you'd know there's no way that's true. If you can find one that has good reviews, or if your vet recommends one, and you really want to know and are willing to spend the money, I'd say go ahead!

I did the blood draw version at the vet, which is usually more accurate than the cheek swab because of having more dogs in the database to check against. The Wisdom Panel results that I received on our family's mutt were helpful and seemed appropriate. I would do it again.

I would also add that sometimes people aren't happy with the results they get back because they think they know what their pet is and if he/she isn't they immediately blame the DNA test. My sister was very upset with one of the breeds the test results said our mutt is related to and because she didn't see that in him she immediately said the whole thing was false. So why some people aren't happy with results may not have anything to do with whether a test is truly accurate or not; for some there's an emotional expectation.
Heather's and KarMar like this.
