I have a question about dew claws

Am I crazy? Are dew claws typically removed on the Havanese or do most of your dogs have them. I could have sworn they were removed when they were little puppies. I'm embarrassed to say I had no idea either of my dogs had them. When Milo was shaved down and when his nails were cut, his dew claw on one foot was growing in toward his leg. I honestly thought they didn't have any. With all his hair I had never felt it.

Our dog had hers removed a few days after she was born according to the breeders papers. It is my understanding when you remove them at a very young age they don't even need stitches.

All of my Havs have had them except one. I have had five Havs from other breeders and all left the dew claws except the one.

I do not remove them although some breeders do.

OMG, now I feel so stupid. I think having Milo shaved down did far more good than simply giving us both a new start. I never even thought to feel for them since I was sure they didn't exist. I don't know where I had read it (a long time ago).

I belive you got Milo from the same breeder I got one of my Hav's from, and yes, she has her dewclaws too.
I choose to remove them off of my puppies, I know someone and her dog got their dewclaw stuck and ripped off- not a pretty sight! It's such a simple procedure when they are babies- I choose to remove them.
Honestly I don't like trimming the dewclaws on my dogs that do have them- what a pain!!

I'm stunned. Since I've been doing all their grooming for a long time I've been cutting their nails too but I've never cut the dew claws. I feel like such a fool.

Smarty who came from a new breeder mentored by an older breeder has her dew claws.
Galen from a puppy mill breeder had hers removed. I noticed Smarty’s as a puppy because they were so strange to me, never having a dog with dew claws before. I find the dew claw nail easy to keep clipped.

No damage to Milo's leg, I hope?

Kodi has his dew claws. It has never been any more trouble to trim those than any of the others. He fusses a bit about all his nails being clipped, but we get the job done!<g>

Geri, It's good thing you had Milo shaved down and found out about those dew claws! It's important to cut them when you do the other nails.
Both my Havs have dew claws of course, because they're Kimberly dogs! One of my Cresties has them and one doesn't. After I adopted her, I noticed she had one that hadn't been fully removed and was just a bit of the dew claw with a thin tiny nail growing from it. We had it removed when she went under for her dental because it was so tiny and thin we felt she could catch it and get hurt.

Right about now I'm feeling like an abusive mother. I'm usually not that stupid.
