SF Bay Area: Waiving the white Flag!!! groomer recommendations please!!

Ok Ok. I officially give in. This blowing coat and endless brushing is really too much for my poor Phoebe (me too!). She's a sport and a champ and a good girl, but this is asking too much.
I have cut more matts than I can count in the last 3 days. I am trying to keep up, but I can see the end is near. We're going away for a few days after Christmas and Phoebe will have loving friends and family look after her, but there is no way I can ask them to do coat maintenance like this!

So... if she's bound to get a puppy cut right after Christmas, it begs the question: what about before Christmas? At any rate, I need to plan and schedule.

Bay Area Havanese owners, will you please post who you have used and that you were happy with? I'm kind of worried and kind of excited. I guess in the worst case, it will grow.
Can you help me by recommending?

i take j.j. to hair of the dog in san carlos.
heather's prices are pretty reasonable.
i took jj to petsmart the first time and they ended up tacking on
"difficult groom" fees. heather had no problems with grooming j.j.

there is also a groomer that comes to your house. i don't have her phone number.
but i can ask debbie, calvin's mom. (debbie is a member of the meet-up group) if you want to send her a message that way. that groomer's name is jennifer.
if you want to try heather, you would need to contact her soon since she books up.

THanks. Looks like they do an amazing job on JJs face. I'm not sure if we need to cut Phoebe's face short for now and try again without mini cord mats... I love her moppy top so much. I think we can keep that, but maybe we'll try some wispy bangs.

i hope you are looking at pics from havanese meet ups and not the avatar.
(that is a picture that i took of j.j, in full coat, right after he came to me from the breeder..)
however, heather will do what you ask and she also will make recommendations if you want.
sounds like you have cute ideas for phoebe!!

No, I'm looking at the avitar, and dreaming that I can get her cut, and have her come back looking like that only without matts and constant grooming!
We can all dream, can't we??

Is she around a year?

Nine months to a year and a half is the worst of it...

Now my dogs do pretty well with a grooming spray and a wooden Cristensen brush.

I didn't just get havanese, I got a lifestyle!

Remember, brushing won't get all the way through the coat. Be sure to use a good comb to get to the skin. I recommend you buy a Greyhound comb as I feel they are the best. Daily combing during this time is better then daily brushing.

thanks- I completely agree with you. I've been using the CC buttercomb and it really helps. Actually, I am almost never using the brushes- only after baths. The comb that goes all the way to the skin is definitely the only way to go at this stage and I like how my comb has a wide side and a narrow side. The very edges are great for sort of picking matts apart too. The brush is pleasant only because it goes around the small matts! Right after a bath, when there are no knots or matts, the brush is a great help during blow drying.

i would recommend talking to heather about what your wishes are and see what she recommends before deciding... i have j.j. cut pretty short. but you can go a little longer. when she stops shedding, then grow her back into her full coat. there is going to be a point when i will grow j.j. back into full coat. except i am going to keep the "hygiene cut"...

Groomer recommendation

Hi Juliette and Phoebe!

I have taken Oban a couple of times now to the Barking Lot in Los Altos. They are fabulous and I would highly recommend them. The only hitch is that they book out weeks in advance so you cannot get in on short notice. They have done a great job with Oban. He actually still looks like his puppy photo! They have left the fur on his head and ears a bit longer as well as his tail and legs. His body fur is short - but not too short. They also do his nails and the insides of his ears. And he comes back happy and smelling good!

You could probably drop him off on your way to work and then pick him up at lunch. The dogs seem to enjoy just hanging out there.

Good luck!
