crazy feeding

am i crazy, my pup has never been a big eater but when he decides to eat his dry food, he won't eat it unless i put handfulls of food right in front of him on the floor. his bowl can be next to him and if he eats all the food on the floor, he won't eat his food out of the bowl. i am sure i have enabled him but it's a nonissue for me until my sister claimed i was a little neurotic regarding his eating. am i? should i keep the bowl out and hope he will figure it out before he starves! i know he won't starve himself but.

haha..Capote is 'almost' the same way. He'll eat from the bowl, but he takes out the food, carries it a few feet away, then eats it...then he goes back to get some more and repeats..

As long as he eats I'm happy..how he eats is a moot point..lol

haha

Beamer is the same way. He does not like to eat directly out of the bowl. He either take some out and eats it a few feet away OR wont even go near the bowl, and then ofcourse we have to feed him 1 peice at a time. ughhhhhhhh..

Neither of my dogs eat out of the bowl unless it is something special- when I add eggs to their kibble and they gooble it down. When it is just regular kibble they carry it to wherever the family is at and eats it- think in the wild, dogs eat in a pack, it is probably in their heads to do the same thing!

I think feeding them out of your hand, I would be careful. If they are hungry, they will eat. I really try to stay away from the game of changing food or spoiling them in that way. We travel often and they need to know that they gotta eat when they are hungry.

Talking

That seems to be normal behaviour for some havs . Tulip does it and so did Asta .. Asta was much more of a grazer - he would not eat all his food at once . He would take some out and eat it leave some on the floor and then come back and eat it later .. I thought cute and funny to watch .. I did not make a big deal out of it as Tulip's Mom said it was normal for the breed .. .
The vet I have now said no way .. So I started differently with Cosmo .. He eats two meals a day . he does not take any thing out of his dish at all now . He eats like a bigger dog - gobbles it up .. He took the food out when did when he was a little puppy ..
He is funny now he really likes the Paul Newman kibble and wants it mixed in his homecooked . He scratches the door of the cabinet where I keep it until he gets it added to his bowl ....
He will be a year in 3 days and it is amazing to watch the change and transformation in his behaviour .. He is doing so well - definetly listening and not as many time outs .. Yeah !!

Just a a quickie about Beamer . I know you find it frustrating but it is actually a good thing as it teaches him to have a soft mouth when he eats and also teaches bite inhibition . So take the time to enjoy your feeding time . We were told to watch T?V and just do it .. It could be a phase -hopefully !

I don't think it's a Hav thing. I think it's a dog thing. My other dogs would do that also. Take some out of the bowl and carry it somewhere and then eat it.
