I use a lid to a plastic container for the first one. Just slid it under when he starts to pee. You need very little for the vet. My vet gave me one of the plastic containers serums come in that are about 3X6X1/2 inch deep. They are perfect. Remember to collect the sample be no more than a couple of hours before. My dogs always pee before going into the vet’s office that is when I collect the sample as they are thinking of something other than what I am doing.

I had to collect many urine samples when Jester had his crystals a couple years back.
I taped a ziplock bag to the end of a long stick. I used toothpicks to hold the bag open. Then I followed him around the yard. When he peed, it was easy to stick the bag under him- because if I tried to bend down or get close to him, he would stop peeing and run off. I could then zip the bag shut and get it to the vet.

For my girl, I use a dedicated small frisbee bought at the pet chain stores and stick it under there as she lifts one back leg. For larger boys, a long ladle can be used.

You need to collect a first morning sample, and take it in before you go to work. Keep it in the fridge while you get dressed (not the freezer - do not let it freeze). The first morning sample will give you specific gravity results - not necessary to spot an infection, but good info to know about how the kidneys are working.
