Bitter Apple Substitute

Mario got an ouchy between his toes tonight. I washed it out, applied some ointment we had from a previous wound he had, and cut the fur around it short so it wouldn't irritate the wound, but he won't stop licking it. We don't have any Bitter Apple on hand, and the usual substitute deterrents like hot sauce and lemon juice obviously wouldn't work with an open wound. Is there anything you guys would recommend to stop the licking, aside from vigilance, that won't irritate his wound? Thanks!

Sophie, Nino, and Brisket (Mario too!)

I'd put a dog boot/sock on the injured paw to minimize Mario licking it instead of putting a chemical deterrent on or near the wound. Good luck and let us know how he does.
