Exclamation Unhappy #1 Hav

Happy New Years everyone,
We haven't posted in awhile, because everything has been great and busy with the family. Things have been going so well, that we recently added (2 days ago) a 5 month mini-aussie to the household. She is sweet and shy and trying to get to know Mojo.
He is not amused! If she gets within sniffing distance, he starts to growl. Since Mojo is MY dog, I have tried to keep my distance from Paige and reassure Mojo as much as possible. When other dogs have come for a play, they instantly started to play!
Does anyone have some tips for me? I have until tomorrow to decide if she is a good fit. All the humans thinks so, but should we decide by Mojo's reaction? I really wanted him to have a play-mate!

Every time I've added one to the existing group there has been a period of adjustment during which I've thought maybe I made a mistake. It took at least a week for the new one to start to be integrated into the pack but I think my attitude helped. I made it clear the new dog was a member of the family and I loved on everyone else so they didn't feel threatened. For the most part I had to step back and let them work out the hierarchy on their own. The only time I intervened was when I thought there was any real danger to one of them.

It doesn't happen overnight, but if you're confident, based upon my experience it does happen.

We still have times when Smarty lets Galen know she was here first, is bigger and thinks she is the boss. Galen has now figured out it is all bluff.......If Smarty gets too rough I pick up Galen and love her, the opposite of what Smarty want me to do. 90% of the time they are big buddies.

Only you can tell if you think it is a passing stage or may be a real problem. If she is shy and he is aggressive it may not work out. But I would say they will probably become the best of friends.

It took Fred 2 weeks to warm up to Scuds. It took Bella years to warm up to scuds, but I know deep down she couldn't live without him. I think if you give it more time Mojo will warm up to the idea of a new playmate. Good luck with you decision!

when we got Rico in Oct.he was 18 months old and Taffy (welsh terrier/terror) was 7. For the first five days Taffy refused to be in the same room with him and in fact, actually slept in the shower (we were in our RV). Taffy didn't eat or drink for 3 days. After 5 days she entered the same room but refused to look at Rico. He tried being friendly, she growled. We were ever vigilant and never left them out of our sight. We sadly started discussing whether we could keep Rico as his safety was paramount and Taffy even though only 5 lbs heavier is much stronger and athletic. She went after him 3x, once when he tried to eat out of her bowl as she was eating, once when he jumped on her from behind as she walked away, and once when he ran in and grabbed her baby when she dropped it. He screamed like a girl, but no damage was ever done. I was firm with Taffy and strongly reprimanded her. I also really worked at showing Taffy that Rico was one of us while still acknowledging her elevated status (as long as she acknowledged mine), she got treat first, out the door first, kissed first and I gave, supervised and at will took away toys (I never leave toys out). After about 2 weeks (during which Rico never gave up trying to engage her) Taffy put her butt up in the air and woofed a play invitation. The rest, is history. We are thrilled. They play together constantly, often share the same doggie bed and at night sleep cuddled up with us in our bed. I am so proud of Taffy. Rico is constantly nibbling her back leg as she walks by, he grabs her by the beard, pulls her ears and nibbles her neck. She seems to like it all. They are totally different dogs, I think totally bonded, a pleasure to have as our companions...it is really a beautiful thing. Taffy is a benevolent Queen and Rico is willing to call her "Your Majesty." It works...

Smile Its a done deal!

Well, Paige is now a permanent part of our family! She is a 5 month old mini-Australian Sheppard with a very sweet temperment. And she will need it until Mojo warms up. They did play (supervised) in the yard this morning, so there is hope.
Thanks for all your help. You guys are so smart!
Shannon (mom to Mojo...and Paige)

Congrats! From what I've read and based on the people I've talked with,my understanding is that it's typically two weeks before the first dog really accepts the second dog, so it sounds like you're ahead of the game. Looking forward to hearing more about how it's going Jane
