when we got Rico in Oct.he was 18 months old and Taffy (welsh terrier/terror) was 7. For the first five days Taffy refused to be in the same room with him and in fact, actually slept in the shower (we were in our RV). Taffy didn't eat or drink for 3 days. After 5 days she entered the same room but refused to look at Rico. He tried being friendly, she growled. We were ever vigilant and never left them out of our sight. We sadly started discussing whether we could keep Rico as his safety was paramount and Taffy even though only 5 lbs heavier is much stronger and athletic. She went after him 3x, once when he tried to eat out of her bowl as she was eating, once when he jumped on her from behind as she walked away, and once when he ran in and grabbed her baby when she dropped it. He screamed like a girl, but no damage was ever done. I was firm with Taffy and strongly reprimanded her. I also really worked at showing Taffy that Rico was one of us while still acknowledging her elevated status (as long as she acknowledged mine), she got treat first, out the door first, kissed first and I gave, supervised and at will took away toys (I never leave toys out). After about 2 weeks (during which Rico never gave up trying to engage her) Taffy put her butt up in the air and woofed a play invitation. The rest, is history. We are thrilled. They play together constantly, often share the same doggie bed and at night sleep cuddled up with us in our bed. I am so proud of Taffy. Rico is constantly nibbling her back leg as she walks by, he grabs her by the beard, pulls her ears and nibbles her neck. She seems to like it all. They are totally different dogs, I think totally bonded, a pleasure to have as our companions...it is really a beautiful thing. Taffy is a benevolent Queen and Rico is willing to call her "Your Majesty." It works...
