I am new here and have been reading some of the posts and have found many helpful. I just became the proud owner of a 6 month old Havanese. Her previous situation did not work out and I was a the right place at the right time. I had been researching small breeds for almost a year and although I hadn't seriously considered a Havanese, I was pleasantly surprised when I researched more and felt that she would be a good match for our family. She is a great puppy, on her way to being housebroken, but still having pee accidents on occasion. Not nearly as bad as I expected though. She is very smart and she does respond to some simple commands. We take her out for a walk 2x per day and she will pee, but she wait until she is on our deck to poop. Not sure if I can change that behavior, but we will deal with it. Just curious if anyone has any experience with this and if there are any suggestions as to how to protect my deck as I dont want it to start to have an odor. She does pee out there too (i pour hot water over it) and clean up the poop immediately. I put a wee-wee pad out there and she really hasn't used it out there, although she will pee on it if she is in the house. I am using a crate and have limited her access to our kitchen/dinning room which is attached to the family room, which I have partitioned off so she cant get access to that area.
I also have two little girls (almost 5 and 7) and they are great with her and she is fantastic with them. Bella, our pup LOVES my 7 year old and really responds well to her.
Input on the deck situation would be appreciated.
Looking forward to learning more about grooming (she goes tomorrow for a wash/cut) and what to expect when I spay her, etc. This forum looks like a wealth of information.....

I don't have any ideas for the poop deck issue. I have noticed sometimes while we are on are walks she will wait to go poo until we get home. I just figured she was more comfortable. I just had Daisy spayed 10 days ago. Let me know your questions and I will tell you my experience. I went in to the spaying process blind.
Welcome to you and your pup! If you don't want her to poop out there take her out on a leash to area that's acceptable and treat her immediately for going where you want her to go.
If you do a search you'll find lots of threads on grooming, spaying, puppy cuts, full coat, and potty training issues. This site has TONS of great information. Please post some photos of Bella when you can, we love photos!
Congrats, Michele! Your Bella is adorable! I can't wait to hear more and see more pics of her.
As some have sugg'd, there are many threads you can look for in the "puppy area" section, as well as the "grooming" - check out the Puppy Cuts thread for pictures: http://havaneseforum.com/showthread.php?t=625 , advice and ideas before you head out to the groomers! See what we have in the "health" section as well and you might find what you are looking for regarding vaccines, checkups, etc.... There's a LOT to read here so have a look and ask if you need help.

Welcome. Bella is beautiful. I would take a sample of her poo and put it somewhere acceptable for her to go in your yard. And then, when you come home from your walk take her to that spot and only that spot til she does her biz. If she doesn't take her inside. and then out again to that spot (shouldn't be a tiny area, but someplace she can sniff and choose) Once she gets the hang of going outside she will probably go on your walks too, but I would keep her from your deck until she has chosen a new place to go. Also use an enzyme cleaner like Simple Solution on your deck to eliminate the odors that maybe you can't smell but she can.
