Rookie Question about Color

What color is my baby in the avatar picture to the left?

I'm guessing Black with White markings. I would say that it is the other way around, but this is the closest combination I get from the AKC.

It's quicker to ask here than contact the breeder at this hour.

Thanks,

Leah

I would say white parti colored- or maybe white parti belton (did either of her parents have the ticking/belton gene?) - it's hard to say without seeing the markings on her back- but the puppies that I have had that were mostly white with black markings on the head and a spot or two on the back I listed as white parti colored or white parti belton.

The puppy in the picture has two big black spots on her back and her litter sister's back is white with a big black spot on one side.

EDIT: I went with White Parti.

What about the parents- was their white solid white or did it have a grey appearence or black spots running thru the coat?

I agree with Natasha: black parti. If there weren't black spots on the back, then she would be an extreme piebald, but AKC doesn't have that option on the papers, so I'd still mark a pup like that as a black parti instead.

You can't have a white parti because parti means "Primarily white with markings of another color (the one first listed). Generally, more than 50% of the dog is white." If you had a white parti, you are saying the dog is primarily white with white markings, which isn't "another color."

Kodi has just a black head and one black spot on his rump (a fairly common Hav pattern). His papers list him as a black parti (belton in his case, because he also has belton ticking)

Karen and Kimberly,

Well, it's a good thing I only registered one puppy last night. I found the Registration Change form and will have to send it in with a sweet $20 for jumping the gun.

My past experience registering dogs has been with Shetlies (three colors at the time) and Bichons (one color). After seeing so many color combinations here, it never dawned on me that I would have to choose from so many colors and markings when I registered them.

Thank you for the correction.

Glad to help, Leah. The colors and markings can get confusing at times, especially since AKC's options are limited to fewer than what we use in the breed.

Oh no! My bad! Guess I was mis-informed at sometime. I was under the impression that the first color you picked was for the majority of the body color, and the second choice was for 'markings'. So.... white parti would make sense--- BUT I stand corrected. I wouldn't too much about changing it on the AKC forms- I don't think it matters too much if you won't be showing/breeding her-
