Thinking of getting new puppy

We are considering adding a new pup to the family. Melo will be 2 in August. I'm certain that the pup will adjust quickly as he/she will have Melo as a big brother to learn potty training, etc.

My bigger concern is Melo's adjustment. He's been an 'only' baby in the house and is quite spoiled. He's not been around many dogs and tends to get rather worked up when he sees any dog. He's also quite a mama's boy. Oy...I have no idea if this will work out. Any suggestions from those with experience introducing a new pup in the family, I'm all ears.

Should Melo go to meet the new pup at the breeders rather than have the pup come to Melo's territory first??

I am not going to be the expert by any means and know you will get some good advice. One thing that does come to mind is certain dog schools offer socialization classes. You may check that in your area. We have a "What a Great Dog" nearby with such classes in addition to their basic training, agility etc.

This fall we brought home our Havanese pup Ruby and we had to work out how to introduce her to Jasper our 6 year old Cairn Terrier who is very reactive to other dogs. In preparation we hired a local dog trainer. We live in a very small town but there were 3 dog trainers to choose from once we started making inquiries. We worked on calming down Jasper and rewarding him for avoiding heightened arousal around other dogs. We did alot of research about the introduction of the two dogs and decided to have Ruby inside her xpen and then brought Jasper in the room to meet her. He barked at her and she growled right back (at 10 weeks old). But after that he would reach his paw into her pen and even lie with his back to her pen and she would bite his fur. After a few days we let them discover each other under close supervision. Ruby was very dominant and we rewarded Jasper with treats for putting up with her biting. Now he is totally in love with her but I still wouldn't leave alone them together unsupervised for very long until I fully understand their relationship dynamics.

Best of luck as you add a new fur baby to the family.

It shouldn't be any trouble with two Havanese, but if Melo can meet the others at the breeder's, I think it would be a good idea.
