Kid Art!

Sophie and I went to a special needs class at an elementary school today, it's a great program with Deb Harp from Purple Heart Rescue (the awesome rescue Hallie donated most of her art sales to). We've been about 4 times now and Sophie has a blast doing tricks, kissing faces, wagging tail, laying on their backs while they do push ups, letting the kids come up with tricks we can teach her, some nosework, etc.

Today Deb had the great idea of having the class draw Sophie while she posed for them. It was really fun, here are a few drawings I got to bring home with me! I'll treasure them. Great kids.

Sohie's pink tongue certainly made a lasting impression on all the kids!

These are great! We once had a therapy dog where I taught. She lived with the special needs teacher and came to school everyday. Molly really helped those kids. I'm sure Sophie is having a big impact on these students too.

It's a very cool program! The first day we went the kids were all sitting on the floor in a circle and Sophie immediately ran to each of them wiggling and smiling and saying hi. There was one little boy who was sitting there with his arms around his knees looking at the floor. They said he is angry all of the time and won't participate in things. Sophie had him giggling and petting her and later when we worked on tricks he actually asked if he could help. Now when we come he is much more animated and always is right in on everything. Sophie knows them now and REALLY goes nuts with them. They learn to be gentle and when we teach her tricks show how you get much better results by being kind and fair than being yelled at and hit which is how most of these kids live.

Interesting, we also go to a boys juvie prison and Sophie would greet each boy enthusiastically multiple times. All except one who I found out later is like a Ted Bundy in the making and really has no hope for rehabilitation. I've never seen her ignore ANYbody before. Deb said any dog she brings there has left that boy alone too. Dogs are great at evaluating personalities!

So many levels of win! I love what you're doing and the kids clearly do as well.
