What the heck?

Max is three years old and we had very few accidents while house training......well, my DH was in the family room reading the paper, Max jumped up on the couch and peed right on the couch in front of my DH! That went over real well. I absorbed what I could and then saturated the area with Natures Miracle.

My question is why or has anyone else experienced anything similar? Max is submissive, but not that submissive. He's typically very respectful. How do I prevent this from happening again? My first thought is going back to potty training 101.

I would first rule out a UTI and then I would give him less freedom in the house until you are sure he is reliable again. You may need to deep clean the couch professionally to be sure you get everything that soaked through so he doesn't go to the same spot again.

I recommend you clean your couch with Anti Icky Poo, which is the best enzymatic odor removal product, imo. And once you're done with that, put treats on the couch for Max because dogs don't like to pee where they eat. The problem may be that the humans (cough cough DH) underestimated how long Max can hold it and didn't pay attention to his signals to go out. Good luck!

I was thinking less freedom in the house too. Having the couch professionally cleaned is a good idea. I'm just hoping this isn't the beginning of a trend!

Boy, I hope you are right! I haven't heard of Anti Icky Poo. I will check that out. The weird thing is Max went in the spot where he lays when he hangs out down there. I like the treat idea too! I knew this site would have some great suggestions, thanks!

These are all good tips, (you can get Anti-Icky-Poo on Amazon if you can't find it locally) but the first is to check that he doesn't have a urinary tract infection. A sudden change in behavior like that is often a sign of illness, and if you don't get that under control, none of the rest will help.

Max has a vet appointment tomorrow. Not that I'm hoping for a UTI, but it would explain the behavior.

Max was trying to tell us something. He has blood and crystals in his urine along with an infection. What concerns me is he really didn't exhibit symptoms (besides behavioral), would have not thought to bring him in. Hopefully he will be feeling better soon. Thank you for the suggestions.

I'm SO glad that you got to the bottom of Max's problem. Sometimes they just don't know HOW to tell us they are having a problem.

I'm glad you got him into the vet quickly. He was showing some classic signs of a urinary tract infection. Hope he is on the road to recovery now with meds to treat it.
