Our Cairn Terrier Jasper is a very reactive dog so we don't take him for walks on the sidewalk where he could run into another dog or child or skateboard... instead we take him to the lake or quiet parks. But now with Ruby on the scene we have a dog we can walk with to the grocery store or farmers market, but how to leave the house without Jasper knowing he has been left behind? When we normally go out and leave the dogs at home, Jasper gets put in the study and Ruby goes to her pen. When we want to take just Ruby out, we put Jasper in the study and when the door closes and Ruby is about to trot to her pen, I have been putting my finger to my lips in a shhh motion. She can't quite remember what this means but she starts wagging her tail because she knows it is our secret sign. It is mostly a reminder for me to not say the words WALK or LEASH where Jasper can hear. I silently put the harness and leash on Ruby and we slip out the door for our secret outing. Do others take out only one dog at a time or have secret codes with their dogs?
She has her poker face on in this picture, Jasper will never hear about the outings from her lips!
