Cats and Havs?!

Hi everyone!
When we brought Bentley home a little over a week ago we were a bit unsure about how the cats would react to him. We tried the next day just to hold him close to one of the cats and it didn't turn out well at all! The cat swiped at him and we've been nervous ever since...! Does anyone have any suggestions about introducing cats and puppies? Or any success stories that started out a little rough? I'm trying to be positive but so far it doesn't look so good! Thanks everyone!

Bacca was a retired breeder that I brought into my home at 1 1/2 years old. I have 2 burmese cats, a male that is 14 pounds and a 6 pound female. Stated out a little shaky but Mickey is now Bacca's best friend and Mary Lou stll looks at him as if to ask when is he leaving. Bacca chases Mickey and Mickey chases him. If Bacca gets too rough Mickey smacks him. They have a great relationship. He has learned to be very gentle with Mary Lou as she is the one with the claws. Not all cat and dog relationships turn out so well but you have to give it a little time.

I wouldn't force the "friendship" between your cats and Bentley. He's little enough that they can get away from him if they want to, (he's a puppy, right?) As they get used to him they will let him know the rules, and become friendlier, or at least, not hostile. My cat was about 5 years old when Tucker came home. She disliked him at first, but just preferred to ignore him. They wrestle now, and the cat is definitely "top dog."

If you search "cats" on the Forum you'll find some threads about this.

We have an outdoor cat and he will come to the window to get Abby to come out and play - they love each other! My daughter bought a kitten recently and when we went to visit for a weekend it took Abby & the kitten less than a day to feel each other out before they started playing and having a big time together! I would just leave them alone and let them figure it out - sometimes they do better without any interference - just be nearby if things get too out of hand!! I have a feeling in a few weeks they will be best of friends or at the least learn to tolerate each other.

I have two 11 week old Hav girls who have been with us for almost 4 weeks. I also have two male cats, Dougie who is 19 yo, 10 lbs and Griffen who is 8 yo, 18 lbs. Both of the cats are very sweet natured. My problem has been that the girls want to pin the cats down and lick them, but the cats aren't ready for such intimacy, yet. I've been hoping that one of the cats would take a good swing at the puppies and put a little fear into them, but the boys are to nice. When the cats come in the house, I escort them through the house to the kitchen and their food, pushing the puppies back saying "No kitties." I think the girls know what I mean, but sometimes they just can't help themselves. As the puppies get older, I the cats will become less interesting (I hope).
