Advice for Shy Guest?

Thought I'd come to the pros here, the crazy dog ladies and gentlemen like myself, for some advice.
I'm "babysitting" an eight month old Shih Tzu female named Ponya this weekend. She is extremely dog shy. Like so shy she just shuts down with her tail between her legs when Posh goes near her, and if Posh tries to get her to play she just growls or barks at her. I'm assuming they have not taken her to any dog classes or have had any playdates with other pups. This pup belongs to my mom's friend, and I have often offered to have her come to our house to hang out and play with Posh vs. being in a small crate all day. I first met this dog when she was ten weeks old....
Well, they asked my mom if I might be able to watch her for the weekend, and of course I said "absolutely."
So basically, I've set up her crate so she has somewhere to go to get away from Miss Thang and I've just been ignoring them...letting them work it out. Any other things I should do? Besides, just saying "Mom, you take the friends dog she's a pain in the arse."
Miss Posh is like "hey babe, don't you want to play?" Honestly, I don't think this dog will hurt her and obviously Posh won't hurt Ponya, but you never know with fear based aggression.
Thanks folks!
Actually, I think if they figure it out in a few hours, I might suggest to the friend strongly that she should take puppy classes and also just have her come over here a couple times a week for more socialization, she's young enough to "nip this in the bud."

Sorry-no pro response here, but I'll put in my 2 cents. Did she just arrive? Like you said, I think she'll loosen up soon, and like you said-that girl needs to be socialized. Maybe entice her out of her shell with some treats? Posh will get her to open up soon I bet. My mom's tzus are way more reserved than Pixie is also.
Dave-thoughts??

Glad to hear they worked it out on their own - that is usually the best way! We visited our daughter with her new kitten a couple of months ago and when we made sure they wouldn't hurt each other, we just left them alone (not literally!) and within a few hours they were having fun chasing around the house!

They're very cute together.
Posh's coat is so long and pretty. I wish Pixie could grow it out like that.

well now that the kids are home you should see this "shy" girl. she is totally in love with my daughter and her little hiney hasn't stopped moving since the kids got home. she's playing with toys and just totally thrilled to be here. posh is getting extra attention from my son who isn't feeling well. violet just said, "i think posh needs some time too." and then came and gave posh some love.

Awww, what a great time they must be having. Ponya is too cute. I had the sweetest little black & white shih tzu. He's been gone for a couple of years now, but I still miss the little stinker.

you are doing everything right. Let them work it out. It's never good to force dogs to greet.
