Could I have your opinion please?

My family has two bichons and we are looking to add a Havanese girl to our family. What do you think of this?

http://www.puppyfind.com/view_listin...6985255bb7d502

I called and spoke with Cindy. The mom's OFA info is online. Can't find the dads. She said that Pansy has had her eyes examined, and a "complete vet exam" for patella and legs. Her legs are "straight".

I want to the right thing, and get the right dog. I don't care about the underbite in the least, but I don't want to promote a puppy mill or a BYB. They did not seem that way, and I would visit b/f I buy.

I trust your opinion - I know bichons, not Havanese (but I want to!!) Thank you so much for your time and opinions or any way you can help.

What a wonderful forum!!! Thanks.

I'm sure one of the breeders will jump on and tell you way more than I could, but I looked at the website, looks better than some, but I would be way more comfortable if the dad's results were on OFA. I would ask for soaped pics of the pups legs. What is the guarantee policy if the puppy has a serious health issue down the road? The prices are really low too, especially for the show prospects with full registration. It could end up fine, but you need advice from one of the breeders here. I hope it all works out for you!

interesting

I think the health guarantee would say alot about the quality and if it is mill or BYB.
But they actually show dogs according to their website, just a diff breed. Most BYB or mills I wouldn't think do that. BUT if they are looking to make some money....maybe.
Did you find out about the health guarantee? The price does seem too good to be true if it ends up being a non mill or BYB with a honest guarantee.

visitng the place would be key, actually seeing the parents and setup along with the documentation of course.

I would do a google search on the owners names/ website/ business and see what all comes up.

Hmmm, when you click on her website link, it shows as a breeder of Australian Shepherds. Further into the site, she does have a page on Havanese. I would be concerned that she is new to the breed and does not have much experience with Havanese...maybe she got into the breed because it considered "hot" right now. There are so many good breeders out there with years of breeding history and experience. I think I would keep looking.

Are you close enough to meet the puppy? With a lot of different experiences, puppy buyers have shared on havanese forum, I would not buy a puppy online PERIOD. There are many stories that haven't turned out well with falling in love with a cute face.

Something about this feels wrong to me. I don't trust sites like Puppyfind, where you fall hopelessly in love with puppy faces. I think it's better to research the right breeder because ALL puppies are beautiful but not all breeders are responsible! I wouldn't just take her word for it that the legs are straight--see soaped pics of the legs and also the parents legs if you want the truth. I would want to see the testing results posted on the OFA website. The pedigrees I saw show some of the relatives were champions but the parents don't appear to be or the grandparents. That's something I see more with breeders that are just out for your money. They aren't investing their time in the breed by showing the dogs to be sure their dog is a quality representation of the breed.

I don't trust breeders that advertise ANYWHERE but on their own websites. I have said it a million times, and I'll say it again, reputable breeders rely on word of mouth to sell their pups. They do not need to resort to newspapers, petfinder, oodle, etc. because they usually hold waiting lists and will not just sell to whoever clicks "add to cart."

There are a TON of amazing breeders out there, many of whom post on this website. Get a puppy from one of them, you will be significantly happier with your pup in the long run!

Edit: $700 is about $1000 too little for a Havanese puppy from a reputable breeder. Sounds like a certifiable backyard or mill pup to me!

Thank you ALL so much. I am heeding your advice and going away from there! :-) We would really prefer an older puppy or even an adult, that's what drew me to this pup.

I've signed up with HRI to foster/adopt. (I've been involved in rescue for about a year and currently foster for our local shelter and Small Paws bichon rescue.) I guess we jsut got excited and jumped the gun.

I'll keep on this forum and read and learn. You have the kindest, most knowledgeable people here. I really appreciate all your advice.

Still a wannabe Havanese owner! :-) Someday my dog will come... (think to the tune of "Someday My Prince Will Come...")

Donna, welcome to the forum! Thank you for asking the questions and perhaps learning a bit from the more experienced Hav owners and breeders here. Not everyone wants to hear about the possible "red flags" that some of us note when we look at sites and/or puppies online.

Christy said: "I think it's better to research the right breeder because ALL puppies are beautiful but not all breeders are responsible!" I think this should be a banner on this forum and all other dog forums!!! Seriously. If I have your permission, Christy, I might use this on some fliers I've made about pet shop puppies and mills.

Is there such a thing as someone who breeds a Hav, for some money but doesn't show them?
And yet has them tested and makes sure the previous lines are healthy and offer a good health guarantee? Or does someone like this not exist?
does a "good" breeder always show/have champions?

Did you ever find out about the health contract guarantess?
I would still look into that.
