Snuffle Mat

Here is a new enrichment toy that has become very popular in our area...

This is my guys enjoying their new Snuffle Mat. They LOVE it!!! It kept the puppies busy for a good 40 minutes with a TINY sprinkling of freeze dried chicken and veggies. Kodi gave up faster, but he was in the game for a good 15 minutes!: https://youtu.be/KV9hUoi_gHU

How would it work for recalls? I would think the dog would get too absorbed in the mat. Or were you using it as distraction training?

Lower value treat in the mat with a high value treat in hand. It only works that way initially, of course. Soon enough, they realize that you have the best stuff so the mat does nothing to grab their attention, and that's when I have high value treats both in the mat and on my person. It's still a faster rate of reinforcement when he comes. It has worked super well getting us started in getting Nino to come no matter how much fun he is having. It's also a nice tool when you have no one to hold your dog back if their stay isn't 100% solid. Kikopup actually released a video on this recently which made me feel a bit more validated. I was just doing it because I thought it might work

Ahh I see Dave posted the video I was talking about. Check it out

Ahhhh... I see how you're using it. I have started my guys on recalls by tossing a treat away, then calling them back when I didn't have anyone for a restrained recall. Toss away, call back. A thousand times. Until they can hold a stay.

It looks like fun, but I think Ricky would think, "the heck with searching, I think I'll just eat the whole mat!" I believe I will give it a try though.

What type of fabric is it made of? I would think it would be easy to make. Karen, can you post a picture of the back please so I can get a better idea?
