Breed Evolving Perhaps

About this Havanese verses Havana Silk Dog defining and where this is heading I have questions.

Is there a difference and if so what are they?

How can one make two breeds out of one?

Are there purer strains than others or.... over the years have some kennels been breeding within show standards in other countries and the breed standards are different?

Clue me in please.

Hi Deb~~the debate regarding Havanese vs. Havana Silk Dog, about 2 breeds out of 1, etc. has been raised, explained, and debated on the Forum in past years, and it was a very passionate, heated, and at times, personal and destructive debate. Here is the longest and most memorable thread on the subject, but you can search for others:

My suggestion would be: let's not go there ever again. ;-)

I think if you are willing to read through those threads you will see the answers to your question change on a day to day basis. All Havanese are suppose to come from the same dogs so as to purity that is out. From what I gather, in order to be a "silk", 1. your dog has to be closely related to a certain dog or 2. not have any close relatives that have been successful in the show ring as a special at the same time that dog was in the ring.

but that is jmho

Everything evolves with time …..With humans involved in the selection of which male to be bred to which female in any species the animals will evolve faster.

Over the years many of the AKC breeds have divided.....Corgis, Spaniels, dachshunds just to name a few. Once all the name calling, getting made and hurt feelings are over there are reasons why these breeds divided. For registration with AKC this is a process that will take generations with proven breeding programs to make sure there is a true difference in the breed and these desired characteristic are constantly produced.

Thanks everyone for your input, I had no idea it was such a controversial topic. It is rather confusing isn't it. Best forum ever though for asking Hav questions on though.
