The lure of a bathroom rug...

I just had a bathroom remodeled and they finished a week ago. Lovely new tile on floor etc. Went out and bought new matching rugs, towels etc. Cassie, who has not had an accident in the house for months, yesterday went in and peed on the new rug! She was potty pad trained and still has an indoor potty area that she hasn't used for a long time.

I have read about the lure of bathroom rugs, but really, Cassie, this is a new floor and rug...no one has peeded on it before you.

So..I washed everything with nature's miracle, removed the rug, will use a small unpeeded rug after showers and hang it on tub instead of floor, close door etc I guess I could feed her in there also, but not sure I am ready to do that yet.

Just when I thought Cassie had left that all behind her! She is still under household confinement (must be in sight and sound, three room limit for supervision because of putting everything in mouth) and will be watched even more closely.

it's really common for them to have a set back at about the one year mark. Usually, if you tighten things up right away, it is short lived!

I had to keep all area rugs up until Truffles was one year old. There is a rug at the bottom of the stairs that they both would sleep on. Sometimes she would decide to pee on it. I thought she would never get over it. Thankfully that is behind us!

Henry also loves the rug and thinks it is a pee pad.
I have to have all the bathroom rugs up at all times expect for when I take a shower then I have one to step on -
but it has to come back up immediately.

Well, it looks like Cassie is not alone! Layla too peed on our bathroom rugs and they stayed folded on the master bathtub till we needed them after showers. This lasted till about 6-7 months ago. So until she was almost 2, grrr! That is the "1" reason I did not continue with an indoor potty. I couldn't figure out how to get her to know the diff between potty and rugs. I also didn't have all you wonderful, wise people to give me advice back then, so gave up and now she has to go outside!

That's why I so prefer litter boxes or trays with grids to any sort of pee pads, and ESPECIALLY cloth pee pads. There is no way for a dog to confuse a litter box or grid with the feel of a rug. (or towel left on the floor)

You have no idea how relieved I am to hear that it's not my failure! I haven't had rugs for years

Yeah, my Ollie loved to pee on the bathroom rug. I can't tell you how many I went thru. then for a couple of years I just had no bathmat.

Now he likes to sleep on them, so he has a couple of bath mats around the house, with memory foam underneath. He doesn't pee anymore on the bathroom rugs.

I think what you did with taking the mats away for a good, long time is key. If you can COMPLETELY break the habit, there's a chance of getting them back down again when they are older.
