Allergic to K-9 Advantix

Does anyone else have a problem with their dogs showing an allergic reaction to topical flea and tick meds? I just put K-9 Advantix on Panda this evening and she flew through the house throwing herself on the floor, scratching, panting, etc. I snatched her up and her skin was red and warm. After using warm washcloths and removing as much of the med from her skin as I could she's laying here sleeping.... It scared me since she was so obviously uncomfortable....

Scary!! I had a cat that couldn't tolerate topical flea meds. You might want to have Benadryl on hand, with approval from your vet, if you try another flea med at another time.

I have never tried it, but I can tell you that my vet does not recommend it for small dogs. He only recommends frontline. He said he sees many negative reactions, especially in small dogs. I hope Panda is okay!

She's up now but a little jittery - and no Benadryl in the house.... I'll call her vet tomorrow- obviously we'll have to try something else....

I really need to put up my story about how I got my havanese. However this is important. I am originally from So. CA. I have two rescue dogs a Shih Tzu and a lhasa aspo. In 1999 my vet in So. CA told me to use Frontline not Advantage on such small dogs. My Tzu weighs 10 pd. the Lhasa was small at about 12 (he has gone up and down during the years). I moved to North Carolina in 2005 my vet here says in small dogs Frontline is the safest. With Frontline do not put it on a clean dog. Two days after a bath or do not bath after applying for two days. It works with the oils in the dogs skin. It has worked very well with the ticks here. I have lots of long leaf pines and woods.

Robbie, Boo Boo, Yogi, and Misty's human.
Poohkey miss you, monkey.

There have been a few reactions documented by Hav owners on this forum. If you go to the search option and type "Advantix+reaction" (without the quotes), you'll see 12 topics besides your own that come up now.

Fortunately, there are not a lot of reactions, but the reactions that do happen seem pretty severe and more common than any other flea control.

I was using it for about a year and all my guys were fine. Then 1 time I used it and Scudder got bumps all over him, that lasted over a month. The vet gave me all kinds of meds, but I think it just had to get out of his system. Fred went crazy after I put it on. He was running around rubbing himself all over the walls and carpet. That's the last time I used it.

Thank you ladies for the good information. Panda is fine today - I gave her a bath this afternoon (still working of mats ....ugh) - however, I wanted to make sure all of the Advantix was off of her. Will NEVER use that again. My "big girls" have always used Frontline successfully so think I may try that with Panda (maybe only 1/2 dose at first) to see how she does...

I'm very relieved Panda is better! Hopefully there's a much better alternative for her.

The vet told me about Comfortis, which is a once a month pill for fleas only. It has no tick protection... The pill sounds ok - but don't know what to do about tick protection.

Does anyone have any experience with the Comfortis (sp?) pill....
