Male vs. Female

Just Curious. We are going to be adding a male puppy to our family in about 2 weeks. We already have Izzy who is a 1yr. old female. Those of you who have males and females together, do you find a big personality difference, or energy level? Will it be harder for Izzy to accept him because he is a male? Or will it make no difference?

I can only speak about my two, not having any experience with multiple dogs before this. In our household, Rascal the male seems more energetic, but Pixie the female is the boss (although that too seems to vary from day to day! I think Rascal tries to assert himself every once in awhile, but Pixie can growl louder!). They are the exact same age (2 days apart) so very evenly matched in development, which might vary with an older and younger dog mix. I understand that male/female mixes generally work better than two females, so you're probably on the right track, there!

Thanks for the reply! Just interested to see how this whole thing works out. If I know Izzy, I think she will remain Queen of her castle and won't be dethroned. She is a good socializer though, so I know she will be excited to play with him, although she may not share her toys!

Izzy will probably keep him in his place. As my vet says, there is a reason why they call them bitches.

Kimberly, that's funny, but so true. I had Kodi (male), and then got Shelby, a female and there was no problem.

Phoebe was spayed at 6 months. So she's not a bitch....

I think the term for a female dog is "bitch" whether they are spayed or not... right?

I had two females, sisters, not Havanese, but....I spent years telling people that there is a reason they are called bitches....I'd never have two girls again.

Mojo does not live with his half sister, but they worship each other and are so in sync that they seem like yin and yang, two halves of a whole. Mojo is much more outgoing and somewhat higher energy, much more independent and willful; his sister is wary of new people, dogs or places and easier to train.

Happy Mom...
