Big girl doesn't need her xpen anymore

Now that Ruby is 1 year old and very reliable about not going potty in the house, the xpen that has dominated our family room has been removed and her crate has been tucked in next to our other dog's in the laundry/dog room. The toys are stacked on top and the grooming supplies are on the washer and the food and treats and are all stored in one accessible place. And when we leave the house the door closes and the two pups are company for each each other. The crate has been her bed since day one so she has a positive association with it and I occasionally toss in a treat so she will associate the new room with good things. She is looking for a cookie now.

She is so cute. I swear every time I think that Havis can't get any cuter I'm proven wrong. lol I still have 5 more months of continued reliability before I even consider letting her have more room when I'm gone.

It really was a toss up as to who was happier when I took my expen down, Molly or my husband! He cursed that thing the whole time it was up in our kitchen and great room area. So nice when our dogs graduate to that different kind of freedom in the house!

Congratulations to Ruby! Chi Chi hasn't had an accident in the house in over 3 months. I'm thinking of giving her her freedom for her 1st birthday in November. Just trying to figure out the safest room. She is soooo nosy.

It is such a relief when they are finally completely reliable... I was so happy to moved those two large ex-pens in front of the fireplace upstairs!

Yay Ruby (and family rm)! She is just so cute and again she is my model for a puppy cut! My living rm still has 2 dog crates in it, argh. I'm so neurotic I'm afraid they'll feel isolated if I put em in a back rm. My husband just gives me the look and sighs.

Nino FAR prefers being in his crate than in a complete, separate room. We really don't have the space for an ex-pen, but our mudroom was the perfect size for him (just bigger than a pen) so we gated it off and he screamed bloody murder whenever he was left in there. If we shut him in the crate in the room though, he was perfectly content.

He hasn't had an accident in months, but I think we will keep him crated for quite some time. He's content, and we know Mr Mischief is safe in there.

OK when I first saw that photo of Ruby standing there I had this huge urge to swoop her up and squeeze her. What a doll she is! And keeping her color so well!
What a good girl all grown up and no ex pen!

I did the same with Rudy. Where does Ruby sleep at night? I also have a crate set up in our bedroom and I'm thinking of moving him to downstairs now that he's older.

I can't believe how fast they grow up. Shama is more than 14 months old now! Congratulations to those of you getting rid of your ex pens. Due to our work schedule, we wanted Shama to have a very comfortable "apartment" while we're gone. We invested in a Pupperton pen (2x6 feet) because we knew we would be looking at it for many, many years. We really do love it. It tucks right under our kitchen island so is right by our dining room table. It is easy to take down and set up, so we are able to take it with us when we go places overnight and when Shama goes to Grandma and Grandpa's house to be babysat. What makes me happy is that we've been able to remove her training tray as she no longer needs to potty overnight or during the day when we are gone (her dog walker takes her out at noon every day). What I really like about this forum is learning how other people do things. There are so many ways to care for our sweet Havanese babies. Most of them seem to work as long they're done with LOVE.
