random forum news

Hey everyone:

I know I always say I am busy, but I want to apologize for being absent. I have been moving and without internet. Not to mention I started a new business which is taking up a lot of time.

I approved a lot of people waiting today. I am going to change it back to non-moderated. I THINK the new questions people have to answer keeps the spammers out. But if anyone sees an odd post, please report it.

I need to read a couple of threads.. but I wanted to address one thing.

Do ya'll know what Julie gets for being a moderator? ZILCH. Nothing. Nada.

She does it JUST to help me and all she really can do is move threads or take things down that are obviously inappropriate. She can not approve or remove people or anything else. So please don't hold her to a higher standard than anyone else. I mean don't judge her or expect things from her just because she helps me out. I really appreciate it and she does send me messages to tell me when I need to fix something and I appreciate it SO MUCH.

Dawna does not get anything either except pure satisfaction of having the power to ban people. HAHA

My pm box has been full, but I am cleaning it out right now. That is the best way to get me.

I will be updating some links etc for now and I will help anybody that needs it. I had an offer from someone to buy the forum, but want to wait and see how I can handle it. If I can get some advertising myself to help pay for it, I will. Otherwise I may be looking into selling it just because it time consuming and expensive. That is why I wanted to hold off on the calendar for a bit for next year.

If anyone has any questions ask away.

Here are a couple of very large Forums that I belong to that do well with advertising. Perhaps they can offer some tips. People hate for space on the page to be taken up by advertising, but quickly get used to it. Holy hell was raised when the Chronicle first started advertising years ago, but it didn't last long.

Both offer "Premium" memberships for some cost, like a $35 one time fee (GolfWRX) or a $20 yearly fee (Chronicle of the Horse), which includes things like being able to post pictures and such.

The Chronicle Forums has a full time, paid moderator, but of course there are MANY more members on those forums and the magazine helps too.

We appreciate the benefits these forums have brought the dogs and their owners, but I don't think anyone would expect you to continue to bear all or even any of the continuing costs.

Thank you for starting it and sticking with it, but do what you need to so it's no longer a burden.

Thank you for doing what you do Melissa! There are enough people in this forum to keep everyone under control (We have a nice family of Hav members).

I also love getting some of my threads sent to my email, I am really glad you fixed that for me.

How many members do we have now? Just curious....

There has to be a way to make it self sustaining at the very least. I'd hate to think of it being sold because it might change over time to something other than the wonderful (most of the time ) place it is. I like the advertising idea, obviously more global than the little bit there has been in the past. Just think what an incredible venue this would be for any business that is dog related. What a captive audience of big time spenders.

Oh Melissa, I am so happy to hear from you. I would hate to see the forum sold. But then again, what an honor to you that you have build something so valuable that someone wants to buy it. I hope the advertising works. and I certainly would be willing to pay a small fee to support it if it came to that.

It seems with the calendar sales this year that would support the forum itself and still have money to donate to causes that are decided upon.

There are ways to make it sustainable. Advertising seems like that would also help expenses.

Dog-related advertising would probably actually enhance the forum, as a lot of the threads now mention places to get coats, harnesses, grooming supplies, etc.

I agree w/Julie. Certainly the amount raised by the calendar sales this year would have covered most, if not all, of the expenses incurred by the Forum. As wonderful as it is to help out others, I think, like any family, we need to take care of ourselves first financially. Then, once our own expenses are taken care of, we can donate to other worthy causes (HCA, HRI, etc.) JMO

If we do go the route of advertising, I agree w/Dorothy. Dog related items would probably be a welcomed addition.

Yes, I am all for dog related advertising. I would also not be adverse to an 'enhanced' level membership with a fee associated. A hobby forum I belonged to at one time had a forum shop associated with it. It was a print on demand shop like you find at Zazzle or CafePress. The problem with cafepress is they have severely limited the amount you can earn on your products, but that is not the case with Zazzle.

My husband earns a significant part of our monthly income via Zazzle and if the Hav forum would want a shop there, I'd be happy to help set it up. I'll bet the board members would be thrilled to purchase hav forum products there to help with the monthly expenses.
