GPS-equipped dog?

Are dogs psychic or do they just have really good memories?

Benjy has been getting out of control barking in the car. He will be perfectly quiet the whole 45 minute trip, but when we get a half mile from "Grandma's" house, he goes beserk because he know he gets to see Grandma. But he calms right away once he sees her.

The same is true going to other people's houses. He knows what restaurants have people working there that he likes and starts barking when we enter the parking lot. (He never barks the first time we go somewhere. Only after he has established a contact.)

Sometimes he barks when people pull into our driveway. But he quits immediately when he gets close to them.

Any suggestions?

Both mine do the same, though thank goodness, it's only whimpering and excited "talking' rather than barking, and always about a quarter mile away from whatever place they like to be. Watson is tall enough to almost see through the window, but Lola isn't, so there are no visual cues. What I can't figure out is when it's not a straight path from my house to the place, like when I'm out running errands and it's the last stop, or I'm coming from a different location. They love going to appointments at the behaviorist vet because it means lots of loving and LOTS of yummy treats. The office is about 20 miles away and includes about 15 miles being on a highway which we're on frequently for lots of reasons. The second time we went for a visit, right before the exit, Lola was trying to dance around in her seat, whimpering and wagging her tail, which she'd done no other time, and has done every time since, though I've made a point to just quietly put her in the car, like every other time, with no fanfare about where we are going. It sure is interesting.

A lot of it is their sense of smell, too. Back in the day, my grandparents had a dog who would start to get very excited about 20 minutes before my grandpa came home. He was on a set schedule as a college professor, so he was back at almost the exact same time every day. They figured out that the dog could tell when he would be back based on how much his scent had faded. That's how crazy their sense of smell is.

Oh wow. I Never would have guessed that. Benjy is very particular about what is in his yard. We planted a rose bush and perennials. He has to inspect them every time he goes out. He smells all the plants even though I doubt they have been marked. Unless he is deer hunting.

Benjy is 14 pounds so he is big/long enough to look anywhere he wants. LOL He sees, hears, and smells everything. I had mentioned in another thread last summer where Benjy's breeders invited us to meet them at a dog show where they were showing one of Benjy's relatives. We hadn't seen them for several months and never at the fairgrounds where the show is. We got in the car with Benjy and he started barking when we were within sight of the fairgrounds. And he had never been to the fairgrounds to associate it with his breeders. Creepy

I think it's really common to just think "Oh, yeah, they're better sniffers then we are," but when you put it into perspective, it's amazing we can keep their focus at all. If making an analogy to taste, it's like dissolving a tsp worth of sugar in one million gallons of water and them being able to taste it. There's a NOVA documentary that focuses a lot on the canine sense of smell, and it is one of the most interesting things I've watched.

HAHA, doing a perimeter check to make sure those smelly bushes aren't going to bring any harm to HIS yard. Been there

My first Havanese, Hanna, could tell when we were approaching my parents home and we lived a thousand miles away and only drove there two or three times in her entire life.

Dang, your Benjy is such a cutie pie!

Sophie and Hallie both also start getting excited and talking when we get near somewhere they know in the car. I've always figured smell too but even so it's pretty amazing.

I lived in Colorado for the first eight years of Sam's life and then moved to Arizona but we took her to Washington state for nine months traveling through Colorado.. I wasn't surprised you recognize Colorado; that was home. I was shocked when after nine months in Washington we are driving back through Phoenix and probably about 10 miles from home in the middle of the night (we got home really late) she just perked up and sat up staring intently at the window and knew that she was close to our house here.
I also have dogs that know when their owners have entered the grooming salon just by smell. They are quiet the whole time but when their mom/dad comes in (and has made no noise) they let you know. Tonight one of my clients let me know that her dad had pulled up just by recognizing the sound of his car. Dogs are so cool
