Second Puppy

Hi All. I have a question to ask!! Has anyone gotten a second Hav as a playmate for their first for when they work during the day or does this only subject the first Hav to being left alone for too long? The Reason I ask this is because when My Wife goes back to work we don't want Radar to be left alone for too long in the day. I asked My Mother to come over in the middle of the day to feed and play with him for thirty minutes so he won't feel lonley. Is it a good thing to get him a playmate because I don't want to subject a small puppy to being alone even if it is with another Hav. Has anyone done this and has it been successful?

Thanks

Derek...

Derek--we just got #2 this past weekend. And although at this time they do have some company in the afternoon, Brutus (#1) is a much more content dog with his playmate, Roxie.

I have to admit it is not without its challenges. I now have a 5 1/2 month old and 3 month old puppy. It is difficult to work on training one on one, but we are trying. It is also difficult to know how much each is eating.

On the positive side, they are a riot to watch. We no longer need cable TV. We have the Brutus and Roxie show every night. I wish I could post long videos--they are soooo entertaining.

Derek--feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

Here are my thoughts on training. It is a challenge. Hubby and I split up for 10 minutes 1-2 times per night to train our pups. But this is temporary! We will probably work for the next 8 years and our dogs will be content with a friend for that time. It is a very individual decision for each dog owner. Take your time--the decision is likely to happen almost on its own.

Derek..

I dropped off Beamer at a friends house today before going to work. They have a 8yr old Bichon. I hear they had a great time together and played and slept together. So I'm sure a 2nd dog will take away most seperation anxiety. We are still thinking about it... hmmmmmmmm

We got Dora for my maltese and her seperation anxiety and it does help a lot. Isabelle would jump up and bite and pant really hard when we would go to leave. We were close to being on the Cesar show! We didn't get excited when she came home or the bad things you arent suppose to do but she still went crazy. My husband has summers off and this helped but then she would still freak out when we were going out. I think it helps quite a bit actually.

As for training. The thing I find awesome with my dogs. I put one in the crate in the same room I am training the other. Let me tell you the enthusiasm the other dog will train with when I put her sister in there and get her out! I use them against it each other- hey, I need all the help I can get!

Derek- We're getting another one, not because we are both gone all day. In fact, I work from home, but my work consists of me having clients come and work here in my office for an hour to an hour and a half per session. Shadow struggles with knowing and being able to hear us in one room, but her having to be in another room alone. I'm hoping having a playmate will help her during those times.

Amanda- Great idea, having one watch while the other one is training. Nothing like a little "peer pressure" to raise the bar.

I feel having 2 are almost a must if you work. Tripp could not handle it alone. But he is fine as long as Dreamer is there with him. Then he doesnt care if we leave. We are actually wanting to get a 3rd dog soon for a better playmate for Tripp. Dreamer is usually not interested in playing unless she just pooped, but thats another thread.........!

Shannon and anyone else with 2..

I have a bit of a question about have 2 Havs stay home together while me and my wife bring in the bacon.. lol

Do you have someone come by to let them out to go potty and play? Or do they just potty on a pad or litter box? I would think that 2 dogs going #2 in the house once or twice each would create a bit of a 'smell' issue until u come home and dispose of it?? Or do you use a doggy door or???????????

Thanks!
Ryan

Laurie,

Yes, She is waiting for me to make a decision on the puppy. We are going to go visit them and see how it goes.. puppy is only 4wks old right now. I think we will visit at 6wks or so to make a final decision.
