Could a Hav recognize another Hav?

I've been taking a class with Cooper and it's been great. One of the biggest reasons I signed up for the class was because I was having trouble with Cooper being aggressive towards other dogs, especially bigger dogs. Most all of the other 7 dogs in the class are bigger dogs and he has growled at them all. Last week though we finally got to meet Chewy the other Havanese in the class and to my amazement, Cooper loved him! For the first time ever he was wagging his tail when he met Chewy! He has met other small dogs before, and still been aggressive, is it possible he can tell Chewy is a Hav too and that's what made the difference? Chewy's owners also seemed surprised at how well Chewy got along with Cooper. Unfortuneately they were in a hurry and I didn't get a chance to visit with them longer about that, but I found that interesting too.

I know he definatly doesn't like German Shepards or any dogs that look similar to them. Of course the trainer has a Belgium.

Yes, I believe they CAN recognize another Hav.

Gucci behaved very differently at the Hav playdate then she has around other breeds. We've had several friends stop by with the dogs, Miniature Pinchers, ****zus, Labs, Brittany Spaniel, and she was far more comfortable/happy around the Havs.

She is very leary of the bigger breeds, and somewhat cautious around the ****zu.

We are starting puppy preschool soon, so I am interested to see how she reacts with the other puppies.

HHAHAHAHA.. thats funny.. there might be something do it..

The Bichon that Beamer has been staying with the last 2 days during the day ONLY LIKES WHITE DOGS!!!!! I'm being totally serious..
He will bark and growl at any dog that is not white. Since Beqamer is white, they made fast friends.. lol... I don't think its a racist thing, just a weird dog thing...

I bet they can tell there own breed from others...

It has long been said that Havanese love Havanese & it usually isnt long before, even if they are shy at 1st, they are all playing together. My Tripp seems shy or scared around most dogs but have not had much experience with strange dogs. But when we went to a Hav show, he was so excited to see all the Havs & couldnt wait to play with them. I thinks its a private club that only they know about!!

I too believe that they recognize other Hav's. When ever Sam meets one, (not very often) they become instant friends. He doesn't like black dogs at all. Big or small. He will attack first and ask questions later. I believe this comes from being attacked by labs twice. Loves German Shepherds, he has lived with two.

That is so interesting! We've never been lucky enough for our two to meet other Havs so I don't know how they'd react. Sammy is not very friendly with any dog at first, usually growls and barks for a bit while Ricky goes right up with tail a-waggin'.

There's a Havanese picnic in Ontario in Aug. that I'm hoping to go to. Supposed to be 40-50 Havs there! Guess we'll see what happens!!

Marg, I'm so jeolous of you and Helen, I wish I could go to the picnic, but Sam in going to be the "Rally O" ring that day for his rally debut.

Absolutely they recognize another Havanese . Asta recognized his sister at puppy training class . We thought she was a maltese ..
Tulip recognized Asta every time . When he died she missed him terribly .
Even though Cosmo and hs buddy are black she knows it is not the same dog and she has from day 1 .. She just tolerates them but she loved Asta..

Interesting. Smarty always loves every dog she meets. She does bark and growls in the down on front position, but her tail is going 90 miles an hour. Every dog in her OB class was so much larger, they all play with her because she would not give up until they did. Her dam's owner had two other dogs that were not Havanese, we have a Jack Russell, my son has a mini and a standard poodle, maybe why she has no preferences.
