Christmas Trees and pups

I've been thinking about Christmas Trees. We generally put up a huge, real tree and it's one of my favorite parts of the Christmas season. BUT... I don't trust Rocky to be left alone with it. I do not crate him or put him in the exercise pen at night although he does stay there during the day.

I was hoping some of you may have some suggestions as to how to keep him away from it. I really don't like the option of putting a fence around it. I was wondering about any kind of sprays or the scat mat??

Of course, I won't put my sentimental or valuables on the tree this year. But, above all, I am concerned for Rocky's safety. He is 10 months old now but still extremely curious!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tracie

We haven't had a Christmas tree for the last four years! I didn't trust Scout or Truffles with the ornaments. I think it's safe to get one this year. 😊

Scat mats are electric, and a very bad choice, IMO. Sprays are not that effective, in my experience. They need to be re-applied VERY often, and some dogs, like my Kodi, seem to totally ignore them. (as a puppy, he used to lick Bitter Apple off things! )

Really, the only effective ways of protecting the tree and the puppy from each other is a physical barrier or CONSTANT supervision when ever they are near each other. We put a black ex-pen around our tree for the first two Christmases with ours. It's not THAT visible, and made sure everyone and everything survived. Just like with toddlers, this phase REALLY isn't that long!

For Molly's first Christmas I used a tabletop tree. Last year I put my regular tree up. For the most part she left it alone. Occasionally I would catch her poking at the ornaments with her nose but she only knocked one ornament off the whole time it was up. I guess it depends on your dog whether it will work or not.

This will be Chi-Chi's first Christmas with us. I hadn't even thought of this. Thanks for posting, Tracie!

I was really worried that Luna (at that time 9 months) was going to go crazy when she saw the christmas tree, but we got lucky and she only sbifed it a bit. It is aldo true that our tree was fake...
Hope you don't have too much truble 😉

I just used a little table top tree with Ollie and I will do the same with Hershey this year. I know for sure he will be a naughty boy haha.

I can't remember the last Christmas we had without an expen around the tree.

Oh, no...you made me just start to think about what to do this year. Last year, Cassie was not allowed in the room with tree, but now she is...fortunately, I have a lot of folding gates, including a five panel one, that I can use to block access to the corner where the tree stands. I wouldn't trust her for a minute not to start quietly removing every ornament she could reach.
