Drug interdiction dogs

We passed from Mexico into California last Monday. A Border Patrol officer was on foot with his dog checking each vehicle for drugs as we passed through the border. This is a common experience.

Although the canine team was working and we had to keep moving, I was able to ask the officer if his dog, a rather smallish German Shepherd, was rewarded immediately when he correctly identified a target. He said "no" if the dog merely identifies the smell of drugs, but "yes" if the dog actually uncovers the drugs. I asked what he used as a reward and he said simply, "food" and then we had to drive off. I found the exchange interesting.

yeah these dogs are amazing. I have a friend who was pulled aside shortly after entering an airport by an agent and his dog. He had his luggage scanned and it tested positive for cannabis. Turned out that prior to leaving for the airport he and his luggage were in the hallway of friends who were smoking up. There was enough scent on his luggage to be detected by the dog an hour and a half later.

THAT doesn't surprise me... _I_ can smell it on some of my son's friends from the night before.

But I agree totally that scent detection dogs are amazing. I've seen less drug work, and more Dept. of Agriculture dogs looking for food items coming into the country. Here in the U.S., it seems that those dogs are mostly Beagles. Most often, it's a piece of fruit that a traveler has put in their carry-on for an airplane snack and then forgotten about, but I once saw a dog totally sure that he'd found something in a little boy's back pack. They asked the boy and his parents if he had any food, and both said no. In the VERY BOTTOM of the backpack was an old, squashed, half a PB&J sandwich in a plastic zip-lok. The dog nose knows!
