Ricky's left eye had been weeping more than usual for the last three weeks. For the last few days, he was a bit lethargic and seemed to be out of energy. This last Friday morning he woke up and the inner eyelid was very exposed, covering much of his lower eye and bright red. His eye looked just awful. Momi was in full panic mode.
I gave him his morning meal early to see what his appetite was like and he ate his food with gusto in about 2 minutes!
I told Momi he wasn't so sick that it affected his appetite.
But I rushed him into the Vet when they opened at 8am.
Ricky's Vet checked him for a tumor behind the eye. Negative! Great news! He checked him for any damage to his cornea. Negative! Great news! No indication of "cherry eye." Great news! He said Ricky had a very inflamed and infected inner eyelid. I said, how could this happen?
The Vet said hard to know why, maybe some debris in his eye from rolling around, perhaps rough play with another dog, or most commonly, a foxtail under the eyelid (which Ricky didn't have). Ricky behaved very well at the office, held very still while examining the eye, and followed my every command to sit, stand, and down. I am very proud of him.
Anyway, the Vet sent us home with three medications - Neomycin ointment for the eye and Carprofen and Doxycycline antibiotic pills with instructions to bring Ricky back in on Monday (tomorrow) if not significantly better. If not better, the Vet would give us a referral to a canine ophthalmologist.
I started his medications as soon as we returned home. Within 8 hours all of his eye symptoms were gone! Today, two days later, he is back to his old self and just raising the dead around the house and his eye looks completely normal!
We have medications for 7 days and we will continue the regimen until the medications are gone. So it appears a happy end to the story.
Oh, BTW, Momi is a happy camper once again.
