Wood pellet litter box

I'm interested in using this method to potty train Leo. Do the pups ever eat the pellets by mistake? Seems a bit risky. Any advice would be appreciated.

It turns to sawdust when wet. Some pellets get eaten occasionally by larger puppies, but no harm. I would say that if one started eating any to amount to anything, that it would be a no go. I don't know how you would train one to pellets that wasn't raised on that surface to start with, or have other dogs to do the "teaching".

As Tom said, wood pellets turn to saw dust, and a couple hear and there do no harm. That is NOT true of the commercial "dog litter", which is EXTREMELY absorbent, hold their shape and swell to many times their original size. I used that stuff ONCE, and it scared me so much that I threw it all out and never bought it again. Stick to wood pellets if you want to give it a try.

The other possibility is to use a tray that has a grate between the puppy and whatever you have underneath. I have some of a brand that is no longer avaiable, but the UgoDog is still available, and although it is designed for pee pads, it can also be uses with wood pellets underneath. This is what we use in our RV, because it is smaller than our litter boxes, and the grate keeps the pellets from getting underfoot when we are on the move.

Oh, also wanted to add that I know a few people who have had puppies trained to pee pads, who have transitioned them to a litter box by putting the pad in the box, first by itself, then with a bit of pellets sprinkled on it, then more... until the puppy is using just the litter.

Hi there,

The litter box that Karen is referring to is the Rascal Dog. I am not sure what the situation is in the US, but I was able to order this product from Tim who operates the UK site (Rascaldoglitterbox.co.uk). He may be able to advise if it still available direct from the US but I see from his website that he does ship from the UK to the US.

Tim kindly arranged to have the "big squirt" version shipped to me in Australia, even though he doesnt advertise as shipping there. For me the shipping cost was very expensive and much more than the product cost, but ultimately worth it. There is absolutely no product even remotely similar available in Australia. I have been very happy with the product.

Hope this helps.

That's what we will try to do--add a few more wood pellets to the pee pad until all wood pellets. I thought this would be more eco friendly and I'm hoping to add wood pellets outdoors too so that Leo would be able to go outside and inside when needed!

Yes, the ones I have are the Big Squirt, and, IMO, they are BY FAR the best. Great to hear they are still available. Probably not worth the price if you are just looking for a short-term "puppy solution", but We have them available to our dogs at all times. Mine are over 7 years old now, and like new.

Yes, wood pellets are MUCH more ecologically friendly than pee pads with all their plastic!!!

Wood pellets fall into saw dust as soon as they encounter ANY moisture, so they won't really work outside. Besides that, I have YET to encounter a puppy that doesn't learn to go outside all b themselves in time, just by praising them when it happens naturally. In fact, for all three of mine, I have had to work hard to encourage them to continue to use the indoor potty so that they are still interested when the weather is terrible. It's easy for them to completely fall out of the habit of using the litter box as they mature.
