Potty in rain

Hey! I live in Southern California where it almost never rains. However......it is raining and he does NOT want to go in the rain. I am tempted to insist, keep him in the pen, and every hour or so let him outside in the rain. Hoping he will deliver and then I will praise and treat. He is 5 1/2 months old. Any other suggestions? We go to Chicago in 3 weeks and there will be serious weather there.

I live in Florida where we have serious rainy seasons, raining seemingly every day in the late afternoon. I just get an umbrella and take them out. They get used to it. I also bought a dog hair dryer. Even if it it had stopped raining, my dogs are in long coat, and they'd be soaked in two minutes from the wet grass. I'm glad it's winter and dry here right now.

Hi Carole, we are a few miles east of you and it is raining here too. Ricky is confused by the rain, he sees it so seldom. He makes a mad dash outside, takes care of business, and makes a mad dash back to the house. Holding a large golf umbrella over him makes it much more comfortable for him. We have a large patio umbrella that I put up on the lawn and Ricky is dry and comfy there when he needs to go outside. It is supposed to clear up tomorrow sometime.

You might want to take your Havadoggie up to Idyllwild or Big Bear tomorrow, to begin getting him acclimatized to Chicago weather. but the traffic is going to be horrendous tomorrow on the freeways.

I got a big golf umbrella that works perfectly to take Rocky out. He likes the rain so I have to shorten up the leash to keep us under it. But the thing is huge and works great.

We are used to the rain here in the Pacific Northwest! Willow doesn't like it but she'll go out to do her business. I do have to say there is no fooling around trying to get her to go when it's raining. If it's not raining she'll take her time, sniffing here and there. When it's raining, it's squat and go and head indoors. If it's pouring rain, I'll put a raincoat on her but if it's just a light rain we just head outside. We never use an umbrella.

We have the same problem in Arizona. Nickie does not like rain and we don't have much. He'll be four soon and never has adjusted to rain. His response is to hold it for a very l-o-n-g time and then, if absolutely necessary, go just off the patio and sometimes not even that far. Mostly he refuses to go outside. He sometimes tries to avoid outside for hours after it has finished raining. I end up carrying him out. He has a raincoat which he tolerates, but doesn't like. The raincoat is too snug with his long hair, but I haven't found a suitable replacement. The pet stores here sell either difficult to put on raincoats or the same heavy winter coats found in colder climates. We think we have an umbrella tucked away somewhere for travel. Rain is forecast for this evening,

Yep, no umbrella here either. Emmie's used to the rain, which came about after a lot of practice; LOL!

My fearless girly recently has experienced rain as well - she goes outside in rain no problem. However she won't go potty! lol
She is super intrigued with the wet feel and how it smells- she won't get her nose off the ground and grass...silly girly!
Did the rain wash away all the marking she did? Because it was like she was ocd looking for something.
I waited for 20 minutes and all we accomplished outside was wet puppy face, muddy feet and undercarriage and a cold mama.
We came inside and she went on her ugo-dog 5 minutes later in her ex-pen.
Glad for all those on the forum that recommended to train for both or I may have been outside for hours while she sniffed around!

eta-CarolG, have you seen Sophie's rain tunnel and tarp video! Such a cool set up for her! But they get tons more rain than So Cal.
