Looking for thoughts & opinions -

Good morning. I originally was going to get a Havanese puppy from a very Reputable Breeder (sometime next year). But my first inclination was to adopt a rescue. It is a dilemma for me so to speak though as our first ever - dog (non-havanese) was from a breeder (reputable) and ended up with a bad immune system which resulted in many medical problems since his 10 weeks to 13 years. Many were non-breed specific related and could get no matter what the breed. But bottom line, thought I had gone the right path and it was a challenge. So we decided on a Havanese and have definitely chosen the right breeder.
But, as you can imagine, it's unnerving still. My heart really wants to Adopt and I guess my "fear" of not knowing the bloodline keeps pushing me towards a breeder. I realize one never knows and I get that. Just curious if anyone has been through similar dilemma and would love to hear some feedback. Thank you.

I can't help at all but I can understand how you feel. I feel the same way. When I think of maybe getting a second dog I think it would be so nice to have a rescue but it scares me. It seems risky. I'm interested to see what others will post.

I certainly understand your fears. I am not big on adoption for my purposes, but I totally respect people who go that route. As you've said yourself, there are no guarantees either way. My older guy, from a TOP breeder has allergy problems, though they are manageable. I also think I made them worse by inadvertently letting him be over vaccinated as a young dog. My middle girl, from the same breeder, and with the same sire has no allergy problems.

I DO think you stack the deck in your favor going with a reputable breeder who purposely breeds for healthy dogs, but there is no guarantee, with any living animal. (I know you know this already! )

Thank you all for responding. I look forward to hearing from others as well.

Krandall - I see you're in Massachusetts. I'm a New Englander as well. Would you mind sharing with me who you went with for a breeder? Thanks again.

The Kings, (Tom is on this board), Starborn Havanese bred two of my three. The third was bred by Elizabeth O'Meara of Portsmouth RI. But Elizabeth only bred one litter, to produce a couple of performance dogs for herself. I went down to temperament test the litter... not planning AT ALL to get another puppy, not even THINKING about another puppy. But Panda danced into the room on her hind feet, and I fell in love. I resisted for two whole weeks before I caved and made her mine. Elizabeth has no plans for further breeding though, so when they made Panda, they truly "broke the mold".

Krandall - a quick question if you don't mind - wondering if you've heard of Jubo-Lee Havanese Breeder in NH? Since I'm new to this forum - not sure if this is an appropriate question or place to ask - perhaps the Breeder forum? Let me know if you will. Thank you!

Rexy is the 19th dog that has shared my life. There have been a couple of purebred Cardigsn Welsh Corgis but mostly mixes that were adopted as puppies or quite young dogs. I decided I wanted Havanese when I had one in a puppy class I taught at our local dog training club. I considered adopting when the time was right but when the time was right I found out I was to be a grandmother for the first time. I decided that I would go with a puppy and later another so the Havs could grow up around my granddaughter. When you buy a well-bred puppy from a conscientious breeder you stack the deck in your favor but there really aren't any absolutes with living beings. When you adopt you may be lucky and adopt a pup that has learned great manners, is healthy and has no extreme fears or bad habits but again no guarantees. If your family is just you, maybe a significant other and/or older well behaved kids use to dogs then adoption may be a great option for you. When little kids are involved either as part of your family or as frequent visitors, it is extremely important to get a truthful history of the dog in order to trust that the kids will be safe and the dog won't be terrorized. That said ALL dog/kid interactions must be closely supervised. Every single one!
