Socializing with Children

Hi All. Does anyone have any interesting stories about their Hav's and kids? How did they react the first time they were around kids? Did they try and get away or stay and fight it out...... My Wife has two Three Year Old Nieces and they seem to be pretty good with Radar. He likes them and had grown somewhat attached to them as well pretty fast. He seems to be pretty good around kids which is a relief considering that I think he went pee on one of the girls blanket to show his affection......

Now meeting their dog was another story. Radar met Cookie, an adult mixed breed. Perhaps Bichone Frise` with like a toy poodle in there, really curly. Well he was there with his little tail between his legs shaking. Cookie was all over him and he just looked away I guess we have to start him off with puppies and them work him up to bigger dogs, Not sure.....

Well I'm sure that when he's at the playdate he'll be better. We haven't had him around other dogs until he gets his final shots before the Rabies shot so I'm afraid he has only been around the one dog. We'll work on the socializing thing when he's able to be around other dogs.

Dora associates little kids with free cookies. There is a very smart 4 year old little girl who her mom does agility with BC's at my club. Leila loves Dora because her name is is the same as Dora from Dora the explorer. Leila learned the power of having a cookie and haivng a dog follow around you. I am not kidding, Dora will follow her up and down the training center. She has learned Dora's sit and down signal. I don't know why but Dora doesn't jump on her and is very good with her. Last night, Dora played with her pretty much all night. Leila would run and then go slow, and stop. Dora was so obedient and so great! I also think it helps that Dora has very positive interactions with Leila who doesn't pull on her tail or try to lift her up, etc.

Sam loves kids, especially little one who drop all kinds of goodies on the floor. My son was 18 months old and my daughter was 4 1/2 when Sam came home. So he has been well socialized with kids.

I think the hardest thing for dogs to get use to is the way kids move. They jump, hop, run and make all kinds of sudden movements. This can upset dogs that are not use to kids. Any interaction between dogs and kids should always be supervised.

Shadow loves kids more than anything else (except me, of course ) I have 3 grandchildren ages: 6, 3, 14 mos. Shadow also has the fun of interacting w/the students I work with whose ages range from 6 to 17. She has been around them from day one and we've never had a problem w/her. She has learned to "get away" from the 14 mo. old who has no problem pulling ears, beard, tail, whatever he can get ahold of. We always supervise whenever she is around any of the children, mainly for her own safety. Seems they just can't resist picking up such a cute little doggy, which is a big Only adults are allowed to pick her up, since she is so wiggly and will jump at a moments notice.

She has a little more trouble w/other dogs. She plays regularly w/my son's Pekingese and is fine w/her. However, when she meets new dogs, she will get a little nervous and try to stand between my feet. She has only ever had good experiences w/other dogs, so I hope she'll eventually get better when meeting them.

At our house, we spell happiness H-A-V-A-N-E-S-E

That is a great picture! Brady also loves kids and most other dogs. We do not have any children, but since Brady came home, our neighbors 3 children have become 1/2 ours. They love him. They come over almost every day to see if Brady can come out and play, and in the winter, they come in and play inside in our kitchen with him. I thought maybe they would get sick of him after he starting getting bigger, but they have been hanging with us for almost a year now. They spoil him as much as I do. All we have to say is "Brady, your friends are here" and he goes crazy looking for them. They are 10, 12 and 14. He is a little shyer around babies, but still a good boy.

He also loves other dogs. He loves to go and see his "girlfriends" across the street from us. One is a bichon and the other a sh**zu. If I say "let's go see your girlfriends", he takes off running to see them. He just loves the girls.

I own a gym and we have a childcare area. When they hear the kids, they go nuts. They want to go in and play with the kids all the time.

Hi All. Well I was very glad to see the results of this Thead. It's always important that we on this forum with the many Hav's in our family realize the importance of getting them socialized with kids and other dogs. My Wife and I (More her than me) have been going insane this Weekend with her two three year old Nieces, her 11 year Old Niece and Radar.....

Her poor 11 year old Niece hasn't been getting the attention she should be because of the three year olds. We decided to cut the weekend short by a day and take them home tomorrow night and watch the fireworks in Brantford instead of Toronto which is fine with me. A combination with them and with us having to supervise them with Radar it's just becoming the weekend from Hell..... It's a good thing but in small doses only. Anyway it's all good. It'll be some time before we do something like this again, I'm sure.

Dusty loves kids. We didn't get her till 7 months, and I don't really think she was heavily socialized around kids, but she's never had any problem. We have three kids, and lots of kids come over, and she loves all of them. She does not like to be constantly pestered with attempts to pick her up, but as long as we monitor that, we don't have any trouble. She gets very excited when her favorite little friends come to the door, and our five year old son is her best playmate, although she doesn't like to be picked up by him-tolerates it though.

Capote barks at kids. Hates them. Till they let him smell them and figures out they want to play...then they chase him..and he chases them...and on and on it goes.

Since there's rarely kids around him as I'm a single female it takes him a while to get used to the fact that kids are ok...not wierd..short people.
